Softball Evens Series with Auburn on Senior Day

4/27/2024 | Softball

OXFORD, Miss. – With emotions running high on Senior Day, Ole Miss softball used a 4-2 win to even the series with Auburn Saturday afternoon at the Ole Miss Softball Complex.

The Rebels (27-23, 4-16 SEC) took advantage of three Auburn errors to top the Tigers (25-16-1, 7-13 SEC). Jaden Pone extended her hitting streak to 10 games with an RBI single in the bottom of the third, and senior Aynslie Furbush recorded the 100th hit of her career, launching a home run over the videoboard. Brianna Lopez was masterful in the circle, tossing 5.0 innings in relief and allowing just one run on three hits while striking out a season-high eight batters. She passed the ball off to Makenna Kliethermes in the seventh, allowing the senior to pick up the save and secure the win.

Auburn took a 1-0 lead in the opening frame, cashing in on a sacrifice fly. The Tigers nearly added another run, but right fielder Jamie Mackay tossed out her second base runner of the weekend at the plate to keep the deficit to one.

Ole Miss took the lead back in the third with the help of a pair of miscues by the defense. Angelina DeLeon led off the inning by reaching on a fielding error and moved up to third on a passed ball and a sacrifice bunt. With the top of the order coming to the plate and two outs, Jalia Lassiter grounded a ball to the third baseman and used her speed to force an errant throw, allowing DeLeon to tie the game. A batter later, Lassiter scored on an RBI single up the middle by Pone to give the Rebels a 2-1 lead.

The following inning, Furbush extended the lead with her 8th home run of the season and the 20th of her career. Ole Miss tacked on a fourth run via a sacrifice fly, scoring senior Delaney Rummell from third to make it 4-1.

Lopez took over in the circle in the second inning and held the Tiger offense in check. The lefty helped strand seven Auburn runners on base while not surrendering a run until the final inning.

Needing three more outs, Ole Miss brought in Kliethermes to close out the contest. The senior inherited two base runners and stalled Auburn's comeback attempt, collecting the final three outs.

The rubber match between Ole Miss and Auburn is set for Sunday, April 28. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m. CT on SEC Network.
