Softball Routs Auburn 7-2 to Win Series
4/28/2024 | Softball
OXFORD, Miss. – In a decisive game three, Ole Miss softball left no doubt, belting three home runs in a 7-2 rout of Auburn to take the series on Sunday afternoon at the Ole Miss Softball Complex.
Led by their seniors, the Rebels (28-23, 5-16 SEC) closed out the victory with their second SEC series win of the season. Seven different Rebels tallied hits, led by Aynslie Furbush and Delaney Rummell, who each had multi-hit contests in their final game in Oxford. The senior duo smashed a pair of home runs, and sophomore Jamie Mackay added a third for the offense, providing plenty of run support for the arms in the circle. Brianna Lopez earned the start in the rubber match after picking up the victory in relief on Saturday. The lefty held Auburn in check, striking out five and allowing only one earned run over 4.1 innings pitched. Senior Makenna Kliethermes closed it out, retiring eight of the 10 batters she faced to secure the win.
Lopez and the defense made quick work of the Tigers in the first inning. The junior worked around a one-out walk and ended the frame with a strike-'em-out, throw-'em-out double play.
Back-to-back singles from Jalia Lassiter and Jaden Pone set Ole Miss up with a scoring opportunity in the bottom half of the inning. A sacrifice moved both runners 60 feet closer, and Lassiter flashed her speed to score on an RBI groundout, giving the Rebels a 1-0 lead after one.
Auburn got the run back in the second, taking advantage of a bobble in the outfield to scratch across the tying run. The following inning, the Tigers grabbed a 2-1 advantage off a solo home run, but the lead was short-lived.
Senior Paige Smith extended the bottom of the third with a two-out base hit up the middle, bringing Furbush to the plate. The designated player crushed her second home run in as many days, a two-run shot, to put Ole Miss back on top 3-2.
With the wind blowing out, Ole Miss went back-to-back for the fourth time this season. Rummell jumped on a pitch and watched it carry over the wall in center for her second home run as a Rebel. The very next batter, Mackay, followed suit with a shot to left, putting Ole Miss up 6-2.
Kliethermes took over in the circle in the fifth and worked out of a small jam, stranding two runners on base. Ole Miss added another run in the bottom half of the inning, capitalizing on a fielding error to push the lead to five runs.
The Rebels firmly held on to their lead as Kliethermes retired the side in order in the sixth, picking up a pair of strikeouts. She went back out to work in the seventh and recorded the final out of the game, catching a pop fly in the circle and clinching the series with a 7-2 victory.
Ole Miss wraps up the regular season against No. 13 Arkansas on the road in Fayetteville, Arkansas, from May 3-5.
