Softball Splits Doubleheader at No. 8 Arkansas to Set Up Rubber Match

5/3/2024 | Softball

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Ole Miss Softball opened the series on the road against No. 8 Arkansas, splitting Friday's doubleheader at Bogle Park.

The Rebels (29-24, 6-17 SEC) dominated the Razorbacks in Game One, shutting out the No. 8 team in the nation, but fell in Game Two. The series, originally for Friday-Saturday-Sunday, was moved up to a doubleheader on Friday with the threat of rain in the forecast on Sunday.

GAME ONE | Ole Miss 6, Arkansas 0
Ole Miss softball opened the series against No. 8 Arkansas with a decisive 6-0 victory in game one as Grace Sparks tossed a complete game shutout. The sophomore held one of the SEC's top offenses to only three hits as she went the distance.

It marks the first shutout of a top-10 team for the Rebels since April 1, 2022, in Oxford, when Ole Miss blanked No. 9 Arkansas in the series opener.

The Rebels provided plenty of run support for Sparks, scoring in the first, sixth and seventh innings. Aynslie Furbush unloaded her 10th home run of the season, and Angelina DeLeon blasted her third in the last eight games.

Lassiter jumped on the first pitch of the game and ripped one all the way to the wall in left-center field for a leadoff double. Pone followed with a single of her own, and the Rebels got on the board on first with a ground out to take a 1-0 lead.

After stranding two runners in the first, Sparks locked in and retired 15 of the next 16 batters through the sixth inning to hold a potent Arkansas offense at bay.

Looking to extend its lead, Ole Miss rallied for three runs in the sixth. Furbush led off the sixth inning with a shot to left field to make it 2-0. The next two batters reached on free passes, and DeLeon scored on a single by Delaney Rummell. Lexie Brady increased the lead to four, sliding under the tag at home on a fielder's choice sacrifice bunt to help Ole Miss go up 4-0.

DeLeon blasted a two-run shot in the top of the seventh, giving the Rebels two more insurance runs. Sparks went out for the final three outs and was able to retire the side, capping off the 6-0 complete game shutout.

GAME TWO | Ole Miss 2, Arkansas 12
Ole Miss was unable to overcome an early deficit as No. 8 Arkansas evened the series in game two of the doubleheader with a 12-2 run-rule loss.

The Razorbacks came out swinging, putting up nine runs in the first inning and three in the second.

Furbush launched her second home run of the day to put Ole Miss on the board in the second, and DeLeon slugged her second of the day in the fifth, but the Rebels were unable to chip away at the deficit, falling in five innings.
