Softball’s Rally Falls Short at No. 14 Alabama

4/5/2024 | Softball

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Ole Miss Softball had opportunities but came up just short, falling 4-0 to No. 14 Alabama on Friday night at Rhoads Stadium.

The Rebels (21-16, 3-10 SEC) left 10 runners on base, which proved to be the difference as the Crimson Tide (27-8, 4-6 SEC) found ways to escape jams. Playing in front of her home state, Jalia Lassiter collected multiple hits for the 14th time this season with a 2-for-4 night. In the circle, Aynslie Furbush got the start. The senior went 4.2 innings, allowing four runs on five hits.

Furbush recorded two strikeouts in the first to keep it scoreless after one, but a leadoff triple in the second set up the Tide, who took a 1-0 on an RBI single lead two batters later. Ole Miss managed to minimize the damage, getting three quick outs as Lexie Brady threw out her 12th base runner this season to end the frame.

Lassiter tallied the Rebels' first hit of the night in the third and stole second to move into scoring position. However, Alabama kept the top of the order at bay, forcing a foul out. The offense had another two-out opportunity the following inning after Jamie Mackay doubled down the line, but once again, Ole Miss couldn't find the equalizer.

Alabama broke things open in the fifth with a bases-clearing double. Furbush recorded two outs, but an infield single loaded the bases for the Tide with two outs, and their offense capitalized to stretch the lead to 4-0.

Looking to respond, the Rebels stranded a pair in the sixth and loaded the bases in the top of the seventh, but Alabama's ace continued to find ways to escape the inning and help the Tide take the series opener.

Ole Miss is back in action on Saturday, April 6, with an opportunity to even the series with No. 14 Alabama. First pitch is set for 5 p.m. CT on SEC Network.
