Softball Unable to Overcome Slow Start
4/6/2024 | Softball
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Ole Miss softball was unable to overcome a rocky first inning, falling to No. 14 Alabama 5-1 on Saturday in game two of the series.
The Rebels (21-17, 3-11 SEC) dropped the series to the Crimson Tide (28-8, 5-6 SEC). Four first-inning runs were the difference, giving Alabama an early cushion. Both teams tallied six hits, but Ole Miss struggled to string them together with runners on base.
Ole Miss threatened in each of the first two innings but was unable to capitalize, stranding a pair of runners on base.
Back-to-back singles and a hit batter loaded the bases for Alabama in the first, and a bloop single drove in the first run of the game. The Tide added two more runs on a throwing error, forcing Makenna Kliethermes out of the game early. Brianna Lopez took over in the circle and surrendered one run but got out of the jam.
Alabama tacked on another run in the second to push the lead to 5-0, but Lopez and the defense locked in. She retired 13 of the next 16 batters she faced, stifling the Tide offense.
Ole Miss got on the board in the top of the fourth. Paige Smith led off the inning with a single, and with two outs, Angelina DeLeon singled back up the middle. Smith, who originally held up at third, raced home and scored Ole Miss' first run of the weekend as the ball bounced away from the catcher at the plate.
The Rebels were unable to climb back into the game, falling 5-1. They'll look to avoid the sweep on Sunday, April 7. First pitch is set for 1:30 p.m. CT.
