Softball Drops Series to No. 14 Alabama
4/7/2024 | Softball
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Ole Miss softball had opportunities but struggled offensively with runners on base, falling 5-1 to No. 14 Alabama on Sunday afternoon at Rhoads Stadium.
The Rebels (21-18, 3-12 SEC) recorded seven hits but left 10 runners on base as the Crimson Tide (29-8, 6-6 SEC) secured the series sweep.
Both teams went quietly in the first. Lexie Brady tallied a two-out single, but that was all for the offense. On the other side, Catelyn Riley worked a strong first inning in the circle, retiring the side in order.
Ole Miss threatened in the second, loading the bases with two outs. A walk to Delaney Rummell followed by back-to-back singles turned the lineup over to the top of the order, but Alabama's ace was able to wiggle out of the jam.
After escaping the frame, the Tide capitalized quickly. The first two batters reached to start the inning and moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt. Alabama grabbed the lead on a three-run home run off the videoboard.
Looking to respond, Jaden Pone singled, and Lexie Brady was hit by a pitch to put two on with nobody out. A wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position, but once again, the Rebels couldn't come away with a timely hit to bring runs home.
The Crimson Tide tacked on another run in the third, knocking Riley out of the game. Brianna Lopez came into the game in relief and induced a double play ground ball to Rummell to end the inning. She continued to keep the Bama offense in check through the fifth inning and helped the Rebels stay within striking distance.
Still searching for its first run of the game, Ole Miss got on the board in the sixth. Following an Annie Orman single, Rummell was robbed of a home run that would've cut the deficit in half. The Rebels used a pinch-hit double from Jamie Mackay to score their only run of the game a batter later.
Alabama got the run back in the bottom of the sixth on a solo home run and held on to the four-run lead to cap off the weekend with a 5-1 victory.
The Rebels stay on the road, traveling to Ruston, Louisiana, for a midweek double dip with Louisiana Tech on Wednesday, April 10, at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. CT.
