Softball Unable to Complete Seventh-Inning Comeback
4/12/2024 | Softball
OXFORD, Miss. – Ole Miss softball's seventh-inning rally fell short on Friday night as the Rebels dropped the series opener to Western Kentucky 3-0.
The Rebels (21-19, 3-12 SEC) had runners on the corners with no outs in the bottom half of the seventh, but the Hilltoppers (25-13-1, 10-5 CUSA) used a big double play to escape the threat and hold onto the victory.
Western Kentucky scored three in the opening frame. After Ole Miss got two quick outs, four WKU hits and a walk turned into a 3-0 lead. Aynslie Furbush was strong in relief, tossing 5.1 scoreless innings.
Ole Miss was held in check at the plate until the fifth inning. Delaney Rummell doubled down the line with two outs for the Rebels' first hit of the game.
Down to their final three outs, Ole Miss threatened with two base runners on and no outs. A ground ball that was bobbled by the third baseman turned into two outs as the Rebels were thrown out at the plate and caught in a rundown at second base. The Hilltoppers recorded the final out to take game one, 3-0.
The Rebels look to even the series with WKU on Saturday, April 13, at 2 p.m. CT.
