Men’s Golf Earns Second Place Finish at Mason Rudolph Championship
4/7/2024 | Men's Golf
FRANKLIN, Tenn. – No. 5 Ole Miss men's golf traveled back to Oxford with its fourth top-3 finish of the 2023-24 season in its pocket after a second-place finish at the Mason Rudolph Championship with an overall score of 840 (-12).
It was a team effort with four Rebels inside the top 20 after 54 holes on the Vanderbilt Legends South Course. Overall, Ole Miss made 59 birdies and 157 pars on the weekend.
"I was proud of the way that the guys fourth without their best stuff this week," said head coach Chris Malloy. "The sign of a good team is the ability to still compete when that's the case. We need to be sharper as we progress towards post season play, but I thought this was a step in that direction."
Cameron Tankersley left his home Volunteer state with a tie for best career finish tied for 3rd place at 208 (-5) overall. The sophomore fired off a 66 (-5) final round, one of the lowest rounds of the day out of the 74-man field, to rise eight spots on the leaderboard. The Dickson, Tennessee, native carded six birdies, four being back-to-back on his back-nine, to earn his first top-5 finish of the season.
Kye Meeks struggled with the high winds in Vanderbilt on his final day with a 73 (+2) round but managed to earn sole possession of 6th place at 210 (-3) overall. This marks back-to-back top-10 finishes for Meeks in his last two tournament appearances for Ole Miss.
All three Rebels Michael La Sasso, Tom Fischer and Tim Tillmanns shot even on the final day of competition. La Sasso rounded out his time with a tied for 11th finish, his ninth top-20 finish of his career for the sophomore. Fischer climbed his way up all tournament to end tied for 19th and earn his fourth top-20 finish of the season. Tillmanns ended his time at the Mason Rudolph Championship at tied for 31st.
Competing individually, Patton Samuels struggled during his final round of play with a 78 (+7) round score. Samuels still earned a top-25 finish at tied for 24th at 3-over overall.
Ole Miss will have a quick turnaround to prepare for the Mossy Oak Collegiate hosted by in-state rival Mississippi State from April 15-16 at the Mossy Oak Golf Course in West Point, Mississippi. The tournament will conclude the Rebels' regular season slate.
