OXFORD, Miss. – Teaming up with espnW, Ole Miss Athletics hosted a Campus Conversations Event on Monday as part of the department's commitment to prepare its student-athletes for life after college.
"We are thankful for the opportunity to work with espnW in hosting this forum for our women student-athletes. This event is a great platform to empower and support women in sports by offering valuable insight and guidance from alumni who have walked similar paths," said Ravin Gilbert, Director of Social Responsibility and Engagement. "There are benefits in learning from the experiences of those who have successfully transitioned from collegiate athletics to postgraduation, and we hope that our student-athletes are able to grow both personally and professionally from this experience."
espnW partners with athletic departments across the country to bring distinguished female student-athlete alumnae and ESPN talent to campus for a program including a panel discussion, Q&A and breakout sessions. At the end of the night, the goal is for female student-athletes to come away with inspiration and support in determining the next phase of their lives.
From ESPN, Play-by-Play commentator Tiffany Greene and Vice President of Marketing for Live Sports and Audience Expansion, Rachel Epstein, visited Oxford to instill wisdom and share what's next once the student-athlete experience ends. Joining the duo are former student-athletes in Donnetta Johnson, Julia Johnson and Armintie Price-Herrington.
A two-year letterwinner for Ole Miss women's basketball from 2020-22, Donetta Johnson graduated from Ole Miss in 2021 with a degree in in Visual Journalism. During her time as a Rebel, Johnson served on the 2021 SEC Women's Basketball Leadership Council where she engaged in discussion related to the student-athlete experience, student-athlete wellness and provided feedback on proposed rules governing the SEC and the NCAA.
Following her time in Oxford, Johnson returned to her native Atlanta where she now works as a marketing consultant for UpSwell Marketing and is the founder and owner of a production company named See It Through Productions and creative directing company called HAPPYTEARS.
Leading Ole Miss to its first national championship in women's golf in 2021, Julia Johnson couldn't stay away from the green and made the transition to the screen serving as a course analyst for the Golf Channel. Johnson earned three degrees during her time at Ole Miss and has either tied or has possession of every individual record for the Ole Miss women's golf program.
In 2023, Johnson decided to also pursue a career as a professional golfer as she is now on the Espon Tour aiming to earn full LPGA status, while she continues to work as an analyst and broadcaster.
A Mississippi native, Armintie Price-Herrington holds both a bachelor's and master's degree from Ole Miss where she was a standout for the women's basketball program from 2004-07. During her time in a Rebel uniform, she led the program to three NCAA Tournament appearances, was named a two-time SEC Defensive Player of the Year, SEC Freshman of the Year, three-time first-team All-SEC selection and received Kodak All-American Honors during the teams' 2007 Elite Eight appearance.
Herrington was selected third in the 2007 WNBA Draft and named the 2007 WNBA Rookie of the Year while playing for the Chicago Sky for two and a half seasons. She went on to play for the Atlanta Dream for four seasons before joining the Ole Miss Women's Basketball team as an assistant coach from 2009-2012. In 2014, she became a free agent where she joined the L.A. Sparks before rejoining the Ole Miss Women's Basketball staff for the 2018-2022 seasons.
She currently lives in Grenada with her husband and two children, where she serves as a financial manager at Bell & Associates Consulting Firm, LLC., Grenada.
Student-athletes at the event truly felt the impact and took its words of wisdom to heart.
"Panel was wonderful & so genuine. I needed it! Thank you!!"
"Super empowering. I have never felt more of a boss queen."
"These women were able to share their stories in an impactful way they carried over into some of the same thoughts and worries that I have about life after sport."
"I could've listened to the panel for hours. I thoroughly enjoyed hearing from former athletes and what their journey has consisted of."
"In the breakout session I loved how well they connected with each and every one of us. They encouraged us to communicate with each other and I think it made everyone very comfortable."
