Softball Unable to Rally Past Baylor
5/17/2024 | Softball
LAFAYETTE, La. – Facing off against Baylor for the second straight season in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, Ole Miss softball was unable to rally past the Bears this time, falling 3-1 Friday afternoon at Lamson Park.
The Rebels (31-26, 7-17 SEC) struggled offensively against the Bears (33-20, 14-13 Big 12). All four combined runs in the game were scored via the long ball. Senior Delaney Rummell tallied the lone hit for Ole Miss, a solo shot in the fifth inning while Baylor hit two home runs off Rebel pitching.
Ole Miss threatened early, stranding a pair in the first inning after Jalia Lassiter walked and Paige Smith reached on a fielder's choice, but the Rebels couldn't strike first.
Baylor grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first with a solo shot from its leadoff. Starting pitcher for the Rebels, Grace Sparks brushed off the deep fly and locked in to retire the next nine in a row before the Bears extended their lead with a two-run home run in the fourth.
Looking to get on the board in the fifth inning, Rummell blasted an opposite field home run, the first hit and run of the game for Ole Miss. However, the spark wasn't enough as the Rebels were unable to climb back into the contest.
The Rebels will play Princeton in the elimination bracket on Saturday, May 18, at 4:30 p.m. CT, and with a win, they will take on the loser of Baylor/Louisiana at 7 p.m. CT.
