Softball’s Season Comes to an End at Lafayette Regional
5/18/2024 | Softball
LAFAYETTE, La. – Battling back in the late innings, Ole Miss softball was unable to erase a three-run fifth inning, falling to Princeton 4-2 Saturday evening at Lamson Park.
The Rebels (31-27, 7-17 SEC) struggled to get the offense going early. They out-hit the Tigers but were only able to string them together in one inning. Princeton's Cassidy Shaw kept Ole Miss in check, striking out eight in five innings of work, and its closer Brielle Wright held off the late comeback to secure her 10th save of the season.
Catelyn Riley worked four strong innings to start the game, keeping the Tigers off the board and allowing just two hits.
Ole Miss had an opportunity in the first inning after Jaden Pone singled and stole second, but she was stranded in scoring position. Threatening again in the bottom of the fourth, seniors Paige Smith and Aynslie Furbush tallied back-to-back hits. A single and a double put the offense in business with one out, but the Rebels were unable to convert.
Princeton broke the scoreless tie in the fifth, cashing in a leadoff double. Ole Miss nearly squeaked out of the inning, but a pair of two-out singles gave the Tigers a 3-0 lead.
Not backing down, the Rebels rallied for a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth. Pone flashed her speed for an infield single, and Smith followed with a ground-rule double that bounced over the wall in right-center. Angelina DeLeon poked a single through the left side to get Ole Miss on the board, and Lexie Brady just missed a three-run home run, which turned into a sacrifice fly to pull the Rebels within one.
Princeton took advantage of a miscue to start the seventh and made Ole Miss pay with an insurance run, but the Rebels avoided more damage with an inning-ending double play.
Down to their final three outs, the Rebels were unable to come up with two runs to extend the game and their season.
