Men’s Track & Field Nabs Three More National Bids at NCAA East Day Three
5/24/2024 | Track and Field
LEXINGTON, Ky. – Ole Miss men's track & field spread the wealth on Day Three of the 2024 NCAA East Regional, snaring three more tickets to the national meet from three different event groups following an excellent showing on Friday.
Those three qualifying performances – courtesy of Iangelo Atkinstall-Daley (triple jump), Toby Gillen (5K) and Ahmad Young Jr. (110-meter hurdles) – currently give Ole Miss 10 total tickets to the upcoming NCAA Outdoor Championships in Oregon heading into what should be an exciting final day of women's action at the regional on Saturday.
Atkinstall-Daley – a junior native of Spanish Town, Jamaica – had the most drama-filled day of the three, leaping into qualifying position on his third and final attempt. After briefly holding the 12th and final qualifying spot on his second attempt of 15.60m/51-02.25 (+1.6), Atkinstall-Daley was on the outside looking in going into his third attempt in 14th place.
What followed was a wind-legal PR of 15.77m/51-9 (+0.2) and a jump up into the No. 10 position – where he would stay after the remaining jumps concluded, sealing his national qualifier status.
This is the first career national berth for Atkinstall-Daley, and in the Ole Miss record books this now stands as the 11th NCAA bid outdoors in the men's triple jump – a group highlighted by Olympian Alvin Haynes' fourth-place finish in 1992. This is also the first national ticket in the men's triple jump outdoors at Ole Miss since Phillip Young in 2014.
Conversely, Gillen and Young Jr. were able to secure return passage to the national meet in their signature events.
In the men's 110-meter hurdles quarterfinals, Young Jr. was efficient over the barriers, snagging the third automatic NCAA bid in the heat at 13.54 (+0.0) – which, just two weeks ago would have tied his career-best time if not for his SEC fourth-place finishing time of 13.50 (+0.4).
This is Young Jr.'s second career national ticket in the event after also qualifying in 2023, making him just the fourth Rebel all-time to earn multiple NCAA bids in the 110-meter hurdles alongside Antwon Hicks (2002, '04, '05), John Yarbrough (2006, '07, '08) and Robert Semien (2014, '15).
Meanwhile, in the men's 5K, first-year Rebel Toby Gillen successfully booked return voyage in the same event he finished 13th in while at Saint Louis in 2023. On Friday, Gillen earned an automatic bid as the third-place finisher in the first heat, finishing with the 10th-best time at 13:59.20. Gillen hung with the lead pack from gun to tape, closing with a 56.36 final 400 and a 1:59.17 final 800 to firmly hold onto his auto-bid as one of the top-five finishers in the heat.
Gillen is now one of just five Rebel men to ever qualify for NCAAs in the 5K outdoors, joining K.C. Nielsen (1984), Pablo Sierra (1993), Ryan Walling (2016) and Cole Bullock (2022).
Ole Miss nearly had another qualifying performance on Friday, as sophomore Arvesta Troupe fell victim to a cruel twist of gravity in the men's high jump. Troupe finished one spot shy in a tie for 13th at 2.14m/7-00.25, but nearly sealed his national ticket on his second attempt at 2.17m/7-01.50. Troupe nicked the bar on his way over, but it managed to hold onto the standard for just a moment before tumbling off.
Also competing on Friday were: Cole Bullock (19th, 14:08.44), Cruz Gomez (26th, 14:16.91) and Elyas Ayyoub (33rd, 14:28.42) in the men's 5K; and Samara McConnell (T-33rd, 3.95m/12-11.50) in the rescheduled women's pole vault competition from Thursday.
Ole Miss now looks forward to the fourth and final day of the East Regional on Saturday, where the Rebel women look to score big with seven additional chances for tickets to the national meet. Competition begins with Mensi Stiff in the women's discus at noon CT and running through Sophie Baumann in the women's 5K at 7:10 p.m. CT.
