Robinson-O’Hagan Smashes Hammer Record to Conclude U.S. Olympic Trials
6/30/2024 | Track and Field
EUGENE, Ore. – Ole Miss track & field star sophomore and two-time NCAA Champion Tarik Robinson-O'Hagan continued to wreak havoc on the Rebel record book, finishing sixth in the men's hammer final to conclude the 2024 U.S. Olympic Trials on Sunday afternoon.
Robinson-O'Hagan found himself in a spectacular men's hammer final that ended up as one of the toughest in American history, just days after also landing eighth overall in a powerful men's shot put final. As ever, Robinson-O'Hagan was unfazed, unleashing a five-foot PR bomb on his second attempt at 74.54m/244-7 – which destroyed his prior school record of 72.96m/239-4 from just Friday night that snagged him the 12th and final qualifying spot to today's competition.
Overall, Robinson-O'Hagan's field series was excellent and gives him added momentum into what should be a highly-anticipated junior season in 2025 for the reigning NCAA Indoor and Outdoor shot put champion. His third attempt of 73.48m/241-1 would have been a two-foot PR, and his fifth-round effort of 74.21m/243-5 would have been a four-foot improvement as well. His sixth-place finish stands out not only as a 20-year-old, but also in a final that featured five beyond the 76-meter barrier for the first time ever.
"Today, beating a few people who are in the pro scene right now, it was pretty cool because I can keep leveling up and they have to worry about me now, where before they're not worried about the young kid," Robinson-O'Hagan said.
At the conclusion of 10 days at the U.S. Olympic Trials, Ole Miss stands with three Team USA members for the upcoming Summer Olympic Games in Paris: Sam Kendricks in the men's pole vault, recent senior McKenzie Long in the women's 200-meter dash, and Raven Saunders in the women's shot put.
The United States was not the only nation with a national championship meet this week, though, and several former Rebels competed at their respective trials.
In Italy on Sunday, Rebel alum and 2022 NCAA women's 1500-meter champion Sintayehu Vissa was the runner-up in the 1500 at 4:05.29, putting her in strong contention to make Italy's national team for Paris. Vissa owns the Olympic qualifying standard in the 1500 at 4:01.66 from the 2023 World Championships in Budapest last August.
In Spain, it was a similar story for Rebel alum and 2022 NCAA men's mile champion Mario Garcia Romo, who finished as the bronze medalist in the Spanish national final at a season-best 3:36.31. Garcia Romo also holds the Olympic 1500-meter standard from both his mile time of 3:50.14 at the Prefontaine Classic back in May, as well as his 3:30.26 from the World final last August that earned him a sixth-place finish.
Other former Rebels in international competition included: Kristel van den Berg in the Dutch steeplechase final (2nd, 10:17.03); Shane Bracken in Ireland's 1500-meter final (4th, 3:44.82); Sean Tobin in Ireland's 5K final (4th, 14:02.84, SB); and Tiarnan Crorken in Great Britain's 800-meter prelims (30th, 2:13.44).
Other nations will finalize their rosters for the Olympics in the coming days. The Summer Olympic Games will be held July 26 to August 11 in Paris, France, with Opening Ceremonies set for July 26 along the historic River Seine.
