Track & Field’s Gillen Scores for Rebel Men at NCAA Outdoor Day Three
6/7/2024 | Track and Field
EUGENE, Ore. – Ole Miss men's track & field junior Toby Gillen capped his first excellent season as a Rebel with a scoring performance and First-Team All-America honor in the 5000-meter to lead the way on Day Three of the 2024 NCAA Outdoor Championships on Friday night.
Gillen – who transferred to Ole Miss from Saint Louis prior to the 2023 cross country season – was only the fourth Rebel to ever qualify in the 5K outdoors, and he became the third to score in the event after finishing seventh overall at 13:59.00. Gillen joins Pablo Sierra (fourth, 1993) and Ryan Walling (seventh, 2016) as the lone Rebel men to score in the 5K outdoors.
In his first season as a Rebel, Gillen won an SEC silver medal in the 5K indoors and scored 12 total SEC points on the track, while also finishing as a Second-Team All-SEC runner and NCAA All-South Region runner in cross country last fall. He owns the Ole Miss indoor record in the 5K at 13:28.81, the first Rebel to ever break 13:30 indoors, and he also ranks fourth outdoors at 13:39.66.
Also competing on Friday was junior Iangelo Atkinstall-Daley in the men's triple jump, where he finished 18th overall for Honorable Mention All-America status at 15.44m/50-8 (+0.8). This was Atkinstall-Daley's first career national ticket, and he was the first Rebel to qualify in the men's triple jump since 2014.
Those two points from Gillen kept Ole Miss in the top-25 of the team standings by competition's end, as the Rebel men finished tied for 20th overall at 14 meet points. This is the 11th top-25 team finish outdoors in combined Ole Miss history, as well as the sixth time the Rebel men have done so across both the indoor and outdoor seasons. Of those 14 points, 12 alone came from sophomore Tarik Robinson-O'Hagan, who won the shot put title and finished seventh in the hammer.
A big day awaits the Ole Miss women on Saturday, with four crucial final events on the track that could determine one of the best team finishes in program history. Action begins at 4:30 p.m. CT live on ESPN.
