FIRST TIMERS
With Tankersley and Fischer being the newest members set to play in the prestigious event, 12 different Rebels have qualified for the U.S. Amateur over the past 13 years. Ole Miss has had a representative in the tournament every year dating back to 2012.
Tankersley competed in a Monday qualifier on July 22, at Brook Hollow Golf Club in Dallas, Texas. He secured a top 16 spot after battling in a five-way playoff for the final four spots.
“This being my first U.S. Amateur I’m really excited to see how my game is on a championship golf course. I’ve heard a lot about Hazeltine, and I can’t wait to get up there and see how they’ve set the course up. My game is in a really good spot right now and I’m ready to get going!”
Fischer was crowned the winner of the 108th Alabama State Amateur Championship with an overall score of 13-under, qualifying him for his first U.S. Amateur. Heading into the final round with a one-shot lead, Tom fired off five birdies to win his home event by four strokes.
“I’ve heard a lot of great things about USGA events so I’m looking forward to the whole experience and playing such a famous course. I haven’t had the complete summer that I would’ve liked but feel like I’ve learned a lot and know I’m capable of playing at a high level soon. Should be a fun week!”
VETERANS ON THE BIG STAGE
Kye Meeks and Michael La Sasso return to the prestigious event after competing in last year’s championship at Cherry Hills Country Club.
Meeks is set to compete in his third straight U.S. Amateur, earning an exemption after winning his second Mississippi State Amateur in as many years. The Walnut, Mississippi native fired rounds of 67-71-67-66 to shoot 17-under at Tupelo Country Club.
“I’m super excited to compete at the U.S. Amateur this year. This being my third in a row I’m super grateful that I’m teeing it up tomorrow. It’s a brutal test of golf, patience, and discipline. Obviously, the main goal is to win but I’m going to take it day by day with preparation, practice rounds, stroke play, and then see what happens when we get to match play.”
La Sasso is set to compete in his second straight U.S. Amateur and qualifies after being a top 100 points leader in the World Amateur Golf Rankings. The Raleigh, N.C., native looks to finish the summer strong after being named a First Team All-SEC selection this past spring. La Sasso was named the 12th All-American in program history and competed with Team USA in the Arnold Palmer Cup this past July.
“Competing in the U.S. Amateur is one of the best experiences for a young golfer. Being able to do it at such a historic course with so many of my teammates is going to be really special.”
HISTORIC HAZELTINE
The 124th edition of the U.S. Amateur will be played at Hazeltine National Golf Club and Chaska (Minn.) Town Course. Opening in 1962, Hazeltine is set to play 7,599 yards/Par 72. Chaska Town Course opened in 1997 and will be the host for the first two rounds of stroke-play. It will measure 6,804 yards/Par 70. Hazeltine has been the sight of eight major golf championships as well as the 1994 U.S. Mid-Amateur, and the 2016 Ryder Cup. Following the first two rounds of stroke play, the field of 312 will be cut down to 64, where match play will ensue.
La Sasso and Meeks are set to tee off at 7:11 a.m. and 7:55 a.m. with Fischer and Tankersley drawing the afternoon slot at 2:09 p.m. and 2:20 p.m.
