Volleyball Earns Day One Split at A-State Invitational
8/30/2024 | Volleyball
JONESBORO, Ark. – Ole Miss volleyball opened the 2024 regular season with an opening day split on Friday at the A-State Invitational.
The Rebels (1-1, 0-0 SEC), began the day with a 3-0 win over Saint Louis (1-1, 0-0 A-10) before dropping the finale to Arkansas State (2-0, 0-0 Sun Belt) in a 3-1 decision.
MATCH ONE | OLE MISS 3, SAINT LOUIS 0
After facing some early, nervy points, the Rebels locked in and took control of the opening set against the Billikens.
Saint Louis opened the set on a 4-1 run, before the Rebels outscored the Billikens, 24-10 for the remainder of the set. Nia Washington proved to be a catalyst for Ole Miss, recording a team-high four kills, including one kill and a block in the final six points of a 6-0 run to end the opening frame.
The Billikens would attempt a response and built a 14-10 lead in the second set behind an improved hitting percentage. However, Ole Miss debutant Emma Ammerman would take over, hitting .429 with seven kills in the second set to inspire a rally from the Rebels. What was a four-point, Saint Louis advantage was erased in just seconds, as the Rebels went on a 6-0 run to take control and ultimately win the second set.
Behind a pair of aces from Ammerman and Washington, the Rebels built a 9-4 lead in the third set. However, the Billikens made one final push to cut the Rebels lead to 15-13, but could get no closer, as Ole Miss secured a third set clincher at 25-19.
Ole Miss was able to secure their first victory of the season with the help of the Rebel veteran in Brgoch as she tallied her career-best hitting percentage, with an .800 clip.
MATCH TWO | OLE MISS 1, ARKANSAS STATE 3
Friday's finale opened with more promise for the Rebels, who were able to create some separation early in the opening set.
The Rebels capitalized on a negative hitting percentage from the hosts and built a lead as high as seven, before going on to win it 25-19.
However, the Red Wolves found momentum in the second set and took an early 7-2 lead. That would only continue, despite four kills in the set from Payton Brgoch, as Arkansas State emerged with a 25-20 victory.
Despite a narrow margin of 13-15 through the first 28 points, the Red Wolves would pull away for a third set win with a 10-3 run and secure it at 25-17. That would force the Rebels on their heels, but the visitors would show resolve in the fourth set.
Washington added four more kills in the fourth set, while Brgoch officially entered the top-10 at Ole Miss in solo blocks with her 52nd as the Rebels built a 17-13 lead. However, the hosts would take advantage of some late errors and recover to win the set and secure the match.
Ole Miss is back in action on Saturday, as the team wraps up the A-State Invitational against SEMO at 11 a.m.
