Volleyball Rallies to Win Over SEMO
8/31/2024 | Volleyball
JONESBORO, Ark. – Ole Miss volleyball finished off the A-State Invitational on a high-note, defeating SEMO in a 3-1 decision on Saturday afternoon.
The Rebels (2-1, 0-0 SEC), recovered from an opening set loss to steamroll through the remaining three sets against the Redhawks (0-3, 0-0 OVC).
After trading the first few points, SEMO would emerge with early momentum. Behind some errors from the Rebels, the Redhawks built a 20-12 lead in the set. However, the Rebels clicked after falling behind 24-17 and rallied off six straight points to put SEMO on their heels. Despite that, SEMO clinched the last point to take a 1-0 lead.
However, the momentum remained in the Rebels favor, who won five of the first six points of the second set. Sasha Ratliff delivered a perfect hitting percentage in the frame, while Shayla Meyer shined with four kills of her own as the lead ballooned for Rebels. Ole Miss would make SEMO pay for a negative hitting percentage, while tallying .265 mark of their own as a unit to win the second set 25-13.
While SEMO opened a 7-3 lead in the third set, the Rebels continued to show composure. Meyer remained highly effective with three more kills, while the Rebels added three service aces to come back and retake the lead.
Needing to pull away from an 18-18 stalemate, Meyer recorded her final two kills of the set, while Ratliff added two blocks to end the set on a 7-1 run and put Ole Miss ahead. All the while, Mokihana Tufono's assist numbers continued to rise, as she ultimately finished with a career-high 46 on the day.
The fourth set nearly mirrored the third, as SEMO made one final push to jump ahead by an identical 7-3 margin. However, Meyer added more two kills to completely erase the lead and make it 10-10.
Ole Miss finally secured the match and broke a 15-15 tie with a 6-1 run that was led by multiple blocks from Ratliff. Ultimately, Ole Miss would emerge with a 25-20 fourth set victory and secure the match.
Ole Miss is back in action on Thursday, September 5, as the Rebels travel to Greeley, Colo., to face Northern Colorado for a 12 p.m. CT matchup.
