9/5/2024 | Volleyball
GREELEY, Colo. – Battling for five sets, Ole Miss volleyball came up short against Northern Colorado, dropping the match, 3-2, in the Bank of Colorado Arena on Thursday.
Nia Washington led the way for the Rebels (2-2, 0-0 SEC), securing her third straight match with a double-double, notching 13 kills and 11 digs. Additionally, Mokihana Tufono tied her career-high of 46 assists and Sasha Ratliff led both squads with six blocks, but ultimately the Bears (3-1, 0-0 Big Sky) scraped out the victory.
Although Ole Miss was able to keep a small edge, Northern Colorado kept things close early on in the match. With the Rebels holding a slight 16-15 lead in the first, Julia Dyess took matters into her own hands, tallying four kills to power the Rebels to a 7-1 run. The Bears made one final push to the cut the Rebels lead, but did not succeed as Ole Miss held Northern Colorado to a .097 hitting percentage, securing the first set 25-21.
With the Rebels looking to build off their momentum, the Bears didn't make things easy as they bounced back from the early deficit. Northern Colorado was able to fight their way to narrow victories in sets two and three, putting pressure on Ole Miss to win out.
The fourth set nearly mirrored the first, as the Rebels and the Bears exchanged points in an offensive battle. With the score all square at 19-19, Payton Brgoch secured a massive kill and service ace to put the Rebels back on the right track and force the Bears to take a timeout. Taking advantage of Northern Colorado errors, Shayla Meyer and Ratliff got a rejection at the net for the final point, forcing a decisive fifth set and leading the Rebels to a 25-22 fourth set victory.
Another close start followed in the fifth as both teams stood tied at 4; however, Northern Colorado pulled away and never looked back, securing the set 15-9 to win the first matchup of the weekend.
Ole Miss will look to bounce back on Friday, as the team takes on Rider in Greeley, Colorado at 12 p.m. CT.
