Volleyball Cruises Past Rider

9/6/2024 | Volleyball

GREELEY, Colo. – Behind the strongest offensive performance of the young season, Ole Miss volleyball responded from a Thursday loss to roll to a 3-0 victory over Rider on Friday afternoon at the Bank of Colorado Arena.

Nia Washington and Emma Ammerman both shined for the Rebels (3-2, 0-0 SEC) recording 12 and 11 kills and career-high hitting percentages of .500, respectively. The Rebels held the Broncos (1-3, 0-0 MAAC) to a .110 hitting percentage as a unit, allowing just 41 total points.

Additionally, Sasha Ratliff (335) became the program's all-time leader in block assists tallying four on the day to pass Nakeyta Clair (333).

Behind a terrific opening set performance from Washington, the Rebels burst out to a 12-3 lead in the opening frame. Washington tallied a pair of kills and a service ace to lead a highly-efficient offensive attack. The Rebels continued to expand the lead and ultimately hit .458 while cruising to a 25-9 first set victory.

Rider would push for a response in the second and took a quick 7-3 lead, but the Rebels answered out of a timeout from head coach Bre Henry. Immediately following the break, the Rebels went on a 6-0 run and swung control back towards themselves. Four more kills from Washington, as well as multiple kills from Ammerman and Payton Brgoch helped the Rebels record their biggest lead of the set at the end of the frame and emerged with a 25-16 win.

A back-and-forth start in the third set gave way to a Rebels advantage and 10-7 lead, behind a kill and service ace from Mokihana Tufono. The Rebels would turn up the pressure and pull away from the Broncos, with Ammerman adding to her efficient total to assist in securing the match with another 25-16 win.

Ole Miss will get a second crack at Northern Colorado on Saturday as the two teams take the court against each other for the second time in three days at 7 p.m. CT.
