Ole Miss Volleyball Delivers Emphatic Win at Northern Colorado
9/7/2024 | Volleyball
GREELEY, Colo. – Ole Miss volleyball responded from a Thursday loss to emerge with a bounce-back victory on Saturday night, rolling to a 3-0 victory over Northern Colorado.
Emma Ammerman matched a season-high with 11 kills to pace the Rebels (4-2, 0-0 SEC), while Shayla Meyer added nine kills. The Rebels stymied the Bears (5-2, 0-0 Big Sky) offense, holding them to a .163 hitting percentage after allowing a .231 hitting percentage on Thursday.
The Rebels were able to take full advantage of errors early in the match as the Bears racked up six before the media timeout. Tied at 15 all, Northern Colorado's Brynn Reines seemed to put the set out of reach, notching three kills to place the Bears ahead 20-17 with all the momentum. However, Ole Miss would not falter and mounted a response. Back-to-back Rebel kills and a service ace forced a tie game and placed Ole Miss right back in the driver's seat. Payton Brgoch and Mokihana Tufono would rise up for a key block and Ammerman put the cherry on top with a service ace to secure the set for the Rebels, 25-23.
The momentum swing continued for the Rebels, who completed a 13-5 run dating back to the opening set and built a 5-2 lead. The two sides would trade swings throughout the second set, before the Rebels pounced when it mattered the most. Kills from Meyer and Sasha Ratliff helped turn a one-point advantage into three and several errors from the Bears put the set out of reach, as Ole Miss ended the frame on a 9-3 run and won 25-18.
Looking to put away the hosts, the Rebels got early service aces from Cammy Niesen and Meyer, with the former matching a career-high in aces this evening. The Rebels would keep the Bears at arms-length for the remainder of the set and never trailed, holding a lead as high as five, before finishing off a 25-19 win. Appropriately, Brgoch ended the match with an ace, as the Rebels matched their season-high with nine on the evening.
The Rebels are set to open the home schedule next weekend, welcoming Drake, FGCU and Little Rock to Oxford for a packed slate of matches at the Ole Miss Invitational. The Rebels will open with Drake on Friday, Sept. 13 at 6 p.m. CT.
