Volleyball Sweeps Drake at Ole Miss Invitational

9/13/2024 | Volleyball

OXFORD, Miss. – A strong offensive showing from the Rebels led Ole Miss volleyball to kick off the Ole Miss Invitational with a 3-0 sweep over Drake.

The Rebels (5-2, 0-0 SEC) hit over .300 for the second straight match, recording the program's highest hitting percentage in over a calendar year. Shayla Meyer led the way for Ole Miss, earning a double-double after notching a career-high 14 kills and 13 digs. Alongside Meyer, Sasha Ratliff tallied a .917 hitting percentage, marking the highest in a single match in program history.

Ole Miss and Drake traded points back and forth to kick off the game, staying within one point of each other all the way until 15-15. After back-to-back-to-back kills from Drake, it seemed like the Bulldogs had all the momentum, but the Rebels would not back down. After a giant kill from setter Mokihana Tufono, Ole Miss rallied from a four-point deficit to tie the match at 23 to force a Drake timeout. Going back and forth once again, two consecutive kills from Meyer and Ratliff secured the set for the Rebels, 28-26.

The Rebels wasted no time in the second set, jumping out to a 9-4 lead that was capped off by a Meyer kill and Nia Washington service ace. The Rebels kept the set moving along and never relinquished the lead as they picked up a 25-15 victory. Meyer came in clutch yet again to tally the kill that led the Rebels to taking the 2-0 lead.

With a two-set advantage, the Rebels quickly used their momentum to take an early 6-0 lead in the third, as Ratliff emerged with three of those kills. Although Drake tried to make a run, Ole Miss never faltered, maintaining the lead throughout the entire set. With the scoreboard reading 23-20, the Rebels took advantage of a Bulldog attacking error followed by Washington's ninth kill to secure the sweep.

The Rebels will keep things rolling at the Ole Miss Invitational as they take on FGCU on September 14 at 6 p.m. in the Gillom Center.
