Volleyball Tops FGCU In Thriller at Ole Miss Invitational
9/14/2024 | Volleyball
OXFORD, Miss. – With multiple Rebels notching career nights, Ole Miss volleyball picked up a 3-2 victory in a Saturday night thriller against FGCU in the Gillom Center.
The trio of Payton Brgoch, Shayla Meyer, and Mokihana Tufono willed the Rebels (6-2, 0-0 SEC) to their second victory of the Ole Miss Invitational after all notching double-doubles against the Eagles (7-2, 0-0 ASUN).
Becoming the first Rebel to post 10 or more blocks since 2017, Brgoch showed her veteran status by putting up 10 blocks and kills apiece. Meyer came in clutch after securing a career-high in kills for the second consecutive game in a row with 21, alongside her 13 digs. Tufono proved reliable once again recording 14 digs and a career-high 50 assists to help lead the Rebels to the win.
The Eagles came out swinging in the opening set, aiming for a perfect 3-0 weekend. Taking it all the way to match point at 24-21, the set seemed out of reach, but the Rebels never faltered, and went on a 5-1 run to remain in the match. With the entire crowd of Gillom on the edge of their seats, the Rebels and Eagles traded point for point, as both teams could not afford to make any mistakes. After a kill by Nia Washington and a block from Emma Ammerman and Brgoch, Ole Miss finally secured the set in exhilarating fashion, 33-31.
Ole Miss kept their momentum into the second set, sitting with a 15-8 lead at the media break. The Eagles were never able to crack the Rebels in the frame, as Ole Miss maintained at least a 7-point margin the remainder of the set. Brgoch got hot, recording 4 of her 10 total kills in the set to lead the Rebels to a dominating 25-14 second set victory.
With the Rebels looking to put the match away, the Eagles hung on in the third to extend play. As Ole Miss held the slight 15-12 lead, thanks to three kills from Washington, FGCU was forced to take a timeout. Battling back and forth, the Eagles got hot at the right time, tallying five straight points to take the set, 25-18.
Battling to force a fifth set, Ole Miss went back and forth with FGCU. Tied at 10 all after back-to-back kills from Meyer, the Eagles stepped on the gas and never let up, hanging onto a 25-20 set victory.
With a winner-take-all set upon them, head coach Bre Henry turned to the bench in hopes of avoiding the reverse sweep. Julia Dyess stepped up to the plate, delivering five of Ole Miss' opening eight points in the set after notching four kills and a service ace. Tied at 13 all, a block by Brgoch and Ammerman brought Rebel fans to their feet for match point. Brgoch then slammed the biggest kill of the night to secure the Rebels a 15-13 set victory and the match.
The Rebels will cap off the Ole Miss Invitational on Sunday, September 14 at 2 p.m. as they host Little Rock for the final matchup of the weekend in the Gillom Center.
