No. 5 Football Wins 40-6 at Wake Forest

9/14/2024 | Football

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – A myriad of miscues kept Wake Forest in the game, but it was never in doubt as No. 5 Ole Miss was dominant once again in a 40-6 victory in its first road trip of the 2024 season.

Ole Miss raced out a 20-3 lead in the first quarter and never looked back, but it wasn't a perfect outing from Lane Kiffin's Rebels, who were penalized 11 times for 114 yards and turned the ball over twice.

Despite an uncharacteristic number of mistakes, the Rebels still thoroughly controlled the action, outgaining the Demon Deacons 650-311, including just 46 yards rushing by the home team. The Ole Miss defense also forced two turnovers of its own, as well as two turnovers on downs, and held its opponent out of the end zone for the third straight game to start the season as the Rebels have now outscored their opponents 168-9.

Offensive Leaders
Jaxson Dart posted Heisman Trophy numbers once again, going 26-for-34 through the air with 413 total yards (377 pass, 36 rush) and three total touchdowns. Henry Parrish Jr. stayed hot on the ground, amassing 148 yards and two touchdowns on 23 carries (6.4 YPC). Tre Harris also continued his Biletnikoff Award-worthy pace, leading Ole Miss with 127 receiving yards and 11 catches. Cayden Lee was next with five receptions for 83 yards, while Antwane Wells Jr. and Jordan Watkins each had long touchdown catches.

Defensive Leaders
TJ Dottery was Ole Miss' leading tackler on the day with eight stops. Louis Moore and Jared Ivey were next with six apiece. Ivey added two sacks and a QB hurry, while Moore shared a sack and recovered a fumble. Suntarine Perkins had an interception and a sack. JJ Pegues combined on a sack, had two QB hurries and a first-down run for good measure.

First Quarter
Last week, Ole Miss went run-heavy on the first drive. This week, the Rebels went to the air as Dart completed three straight passes to open the game before handing to Parrish, who exploded up the middle for a 25-yard touchdown. Parrish's explosive TD capped a lightning-quick 75-yard drive as Ole Miss took the lead in just 1:25.

Wake Forest was driving in response just shy of midfield when Pegues and Ivey combined on a third-down sack to end the threat and force a punt.

Ole Miss looked like it was on its way to another touchdown thanks to a spectacular up-and-over 4th-and-short conversion by Pegues, but shortly thereafter, Dart couldn't corral a high snap and Wake Forest took advantage of the miscue with a fumble recovery.

The Demon Deacons capitalized after Hank Bachmeier connected with Donavon Greene on a long pass play, and a penalty against the Rebel secondary set up a 42-yard field goal by Matthew Dennis to make it a 7-3 game.

That score didn't last long. On the second play of the ensuing drive, Dart found a wide-open Jordan Watkins for maybe the easiest 75-yard touchdown the Rebels will have all season long.

The Rebel defense kept that momentum going with a quick three-and-out, fueled by heavy QB pressure by Walter Nolen, Chris Paul Jr. and Pegues—then Pegues and Nolen combined on a tackle for loss to force the punt.

Dart completed his first seven passes before an apparent completion to Wells was dislodged as the receiver hit the turf. It was no matter, as Dart hit Wells on a 20-yard gain two plays later. Then two plays after that, he handed to Parrish for another explosive TD run to make it 20-3 after a missed PAT.

The Rebel defense forced its second three-and-out just before the end of the first quarter. Wake Forest had just four first downs in the opening frame.

Second Quarter
Punter Fraser Masin was called into action for the first time since Week 1 on the first drive of the second quarter. A holding penalty set the Rebels behind the chains, and Dart was sacked on 3rd-and-long to force the punt.

The Rebel defense responded forcing a punt of its own, and the offense responded in turn with an impressive scoring drive. Ole Miss methodically marched 71 yards in 16 plays and looked bound for the end zone once again. Dart scrambled and dove on 3rd-and-goal but was stopped at the goal line and flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct for removing his helmet, forcing the Rebels to settle for a field goal, making it a 23-3 contest with 4:44 to go in the half.

Wake Forest again chipped its way into Ole Miss territory but was again turned way in its quest for a touchdown. The Demon Deacons drove just inside the Rebel red zone to the 19 but went no further, settling for a field goal to make it 23-6 at the break.

Ole Miss outgained Wake Forest 385-155 in the first half and held the Demon Deacons to just five rushing yards and eight first downs. Dart was 16-for-21 for 258 yards passing with another 19 on the ground in the first half. Parrish had already tallied 85 yards and two touchdowns on 14 carries, while Harris had a team-high 83 receiving yards on seven catches.

Third Quarter
A pair of Ole Miss defensive holding penalties gave Wake Forest life on its first drive of the second half, including one that negated a fumble recovery for the Rebels. But the drive stalled after Isaiah Hamilton pushed Horatio Fields out of bounds to defend what would've been a long third-down conversion.

On the following drive, Dart broke a school record for the second week in a row, completing his 177th consecutive pass without an interception, snapping Eli Manning's mark. Unfortunately, the streak didn't last long. The following play, Dart was chased to the perimeter and forced a pass into traffic for his first interception since the Georgia game last season.

Penalties again devastated the Rebel defense on the next drive. One negated a turnover on downs, and yet another erased an Ole Miss fumble recovery. But the Rebel defense made sure all the miscues didn't appear on the scoreboard, forcing a turnover on downs inside their own five-yard line to keep the score 23-6.

The Rebels quickly got out of the shadow of their own goal post on the back of Parrish, then drove into the Wake Forest red zone on long completions to Lee and Harris. Finally, Dart finished the job himself, making up for coming up short on his last attempted TD scramble. This time, Dart took a QB draw and dragged half of the Demon Deacon defense into the end zone to make cap an 11-play, 96-yard drive.

Fourth Quarter
The next drive for Wake Forest was more of the same. Again the Demon Deacons drove down to the red zone, and again they were denied as pass breakups by Trey Washington and Brandon Turnage led to another turnover on downs.

The next drive for Ole Miss was also more of the same. The Rebels used a balanced attack to march down the field, highlighted by a 19-yard reception by Harris and an 18-yard scamper to convert on third down by Matt Jones. However, Ole Miss was hurt again by two penalties in the red zone and settled for a 26-yard Caden Davis field goal.

It wasn't long before Ole Miss did find the end zone, though. John Saunders Jr. forced and Moore recovered a fumble on the second play of the next drive. Three plays later, Juice Wells delivered the highlight of the game, hauling in an incredible one-handed catch down the sideline for a 31-yard touchdown.

Suntarine Perkins added to the highlight reel on the following drive as Ole Miss yet again turned Wake Forest away not far from the end zone. Jamarious Brown swatted a Michael Kern pass attempt just outside the red zone, and Perkins made the tip-drill pick to punctuate the win.
