9/21/2024 | Volleyball
HOUSTON – Playing in its final non-conference matches of the season, Ole Miss volleyball picked up a pair of 3-1 victories against Tennessee State and Texas A&M Commerce to go undefeated at the Cougar Challenge.
The Rebels (10-2, 0-0 SEC) are currently on an eight-match winning streak after victories over the Tigers (4-8, 0-0 OVC) and Lions (3-9, 0-0 Southland), which marks the longest in the Bre Henry era. Payton Brgoch put on a show in her final career non-conference matches, racking up nine blocks, 37 kills and a .439 hitting clip over the span of both matches.
MATCH ONE | OLE MISS 3, TENNESSEE STATE 1
In her season debut, Vivian Miller led the Rebels offensively with 15 kills. Sommer Daniel earned her first double-double of the season after tying her career-high in assists with 49, while adding 17 digs. On the defensive side of the ball, Ole Miss held Tennessee State to a .158 hitting percentage, including a .000 clip in the second set.
A slow start turned into an early deficit for Ole Miss. Emma Ammerman and Miller tallied back-to-back kills to fight back within two at 22-20, but couldn't close the gap on the Tigers. Tennessee State was able to secure the first set, 25-22, despite Ole Miss out hitting them with a .368 clip.
The Rebels did not back down, emerging with a 12-8 lead to start the second set behind three kills from Miller. Tennessee State battled back with a 3-0 run to make it 17-15, forcing Ole Miss to call a timeout. After the Rebels regrouped, they never looked back as Shayla Meyer's two kills and service aces apiece sparked the Rebels to an 8-1 run to cap off the set in Ole Miss' favor, 25-16.
All tied up at 1-1, the Tigers opened the set with some momentum until a kill by Ammerman sparked a 7-1 run to push the Rebels into a lead that they wouldn't lose again in the third. An asset from the bench throughout the match, Miller got hot, recording seven of her 15 total kills in the third set, including back-to-back swings to capture the final two points for another Rebel set win, 25-17.
As the Rebels looked to close out the first matchup of the day, both teams traded points until an 7-1 run highlighted by two more Miller kills extended Ole Miss' lead to 19-12. To clinch the first match of the day, the dynamic duo of Sommer Daniel and Tessa Jones worked together to notch the final two points, clinching the fourth set, 25-17.
MATCH TWO | OLE MISS 3, TEXAS A&M COMMERCE 1
Backed by five blocks and a season-high 15 kills from Brgoch, the Rebels took care of business and knocked off the Lions in the final match of the weekend, 3-1. Alongside Brgoch, Nia Washington led Ole Miss to their best hitting performance at the Cougar Challenge with 13 kills on a .500 hitting percentage. Additionally, Jones added 12 more kills and earned a .409 hitting clip to add to her career-best weekend.
Ole Miss jumped out to an early 8-3 lead in the first set, forcing Texas A&M Commerce to take an early timeout. The Lions battled back to within three, but Ole Miss went lights out the rest of the set, surging to a 10-1 run led by three kills from Washington to secure the 1-0 advantage for the Rebels, 25-13. The Rebels defense suffocated Tennessee State to a tune of a .000 hitting clip.
The Lions turned the momentum back in their favor in the second set, but back-to-back kills by Jones tied the contest at 11-11. Both teams traded points until it was 16-16, but Texas A&M Commerce regained their momentum and eventually pulled away to secure their lone set victory of the match, 25-20.
Ole Miss continued to battle, gritting out a tough third set win with an impressive 21 team kills. The Rebels went back-and-forth with the Lions but trailed 17-13, until a Jones kill sparked an 11-2 run that placed Ole Miss back in front. Three consecutive kills from Washington put the cherry on top for the Rebels, seeing them to a 25-20 third set win.
Sitting just one set away from going undefeated on the weekend, Brgoch showed her veteran status by taking the match into her own hands. In the fourth and final set, the Parker, Colorado, native tallied six of her season-high 15 kills on the match. The Lions were able to keep it close early, but the Rebels took advantage of some attacking errors to take an 18-13 lead. To cap off the third Ole Miss win in Houston, Brgoch assisted in two final blocks before Miller laid down a clinching kill to secure the set, 25-20.
SEC play awaits the Rebels next weekend, as Ole Miss travels to Fayetteville, Arkansas to face the Razorbacks. The match will tip off on Sunday, September 29 at 12 p.m., and will be televised on the SEC Network.
