Volleyball Drops SEC Opener at Arkansas
9/29/2024 | Volleyball
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Despite a pair of narrow set losses, the Ole Miss volleyball program fell, 3-0, at Arkansas in the first match of the Southeastern Conference campaign on Sunday afternoon at Barnhill Arena.
Payton Brgoch and Julia Dyess each recorded 12 kills and hit over .400 for the Rebels (10-3, 0-1 SEC), while Mokihana Tufono added 41 assists. For Dyess, it also marked her first double-double of the season with an additional 12 digs. Aniya Madkin led the way for the Razorbacks (12-2, 2-0 SEC) with 15 kills.
From the start, both sides didn't miss a beat, as the first set ultimately featured nine lead changes. Nia Washington tallied three of the Rebels first six points and Brgoch added a pair of kills to put Ole Miss up 11-10. The Razorbacks generated some momentum to regain the advantage and appeared poised to go up a set with a 21-19 lead. However, Shayla Meyer came alive with three kills and gave the Rebels a set point at 26-25. Arkansas would weather the first set storm and pull away to win 29-27.
The emotionally taxing first set took its toll early in the second, as the Rebels fell into an early 10-2 hole. That lead would expand further for the hosts, who continue to press the issue and built a 17-6 advantage. Nevertheless, the Rebels regrouped and attempted a late push, as Meyer and Dyess helped the offense push their way back. What was an 11-point advantage was cut to four by another Dyess kill, but the Razorbacks once again got points where it mattered to take the second set, 25-19.
The momentum from the second set was evident early in the third set, as the Rebels recorded the first three points and would go on to build a 12-9 advantage. Dyess remained red-hot, with four consecutive kills and the Rebels appeared poised to extend the match. After the Rebels led 18-15, the Razorbacks came alive, with a 6-2 run to jump back in front. For the second time this afternoon, the Rebels and Razorbacks found themselves tied at 23-23, but kills from Zoi Evans and Romani Thurman would get Arkansas the win.
Ole Miss returns home to start a three-match home slate in SEC play that starts next weekend, beginning by hosting No. 20 Tennessee on Friday at 6:30 p.m. CT.
