Volleyball Opens SEC Home Schedule Against Tennessee, LSU

10/3/2024 | Volleyball

OXFORD, Miss. – The Ole Miss volleyball program makes a long-awaited return to the Gillom Athletic Performance Center after four straight road matches, hosting a pair of SEC contests against Tennessee and LSU.

The Rebels (10-3, 0-1 SEC) will open against the Lady Volunteers (8-4, 1-1 SEC) on Friday at 6:30 p.m. CT, before hosting the Tigers (8-5, 0-2 SEC) on Sunday at 2 p.m. CT.

Friday's match will be the program's annual Dig Pink night. Wear pink and support the Rebels as they play for the purpose of changing and improving the future of cancer care. Sunday's contest is the team's mental health awareness night. Wear green to support the Rebels in bringing awareness and destigmatizing mental health.

RALLY POINTS
  • Ole Miss volleyball seeks their first win in SEC play and have won nine of their last 11 matches.
  • Sasha Ratliff has a chance at making history this weekend, standing just three blocks away from taking sole possession of first on the Rebels all-time blocks leaderboard in the rally scoring era.
  • Ratliff is also on the chase for 1,000 kills in her career, standing at 961 in her career. Ratliff ranks 10th all-time at Ole Miss in kills in the rally scoring era.
  • Libero Cammy Niesen now stands at 1,079 career digs, which ranks seventh all-time in the rally scoring era and 12th all-time between both eras.
  • Friday's match features two of the top-40 hitters in the nation, as Payton Brgoch (38th in the NCAA) takes the court against the national leader in hitting percentage, Keondreya Granberry.
  • The Rebels rank third in the SEC and 42nd nationally in opponent hitting percentage, holding their opponents to a .166 hitting percentage.

SERIES HISTORY
  • Ole Miss is looking to break a five-match losing streak to the Lady Vols as the Rebels trail 11-52 in the all-time ledger.
  • The Rebels won their last meeting back in 2019, winning a tight, 3-2 decision at the Gillom Center to open SEC play that season. The match mirrors this Friday's affair, with the Lady Vols receiving votes in the national polls entering both the 2019 match and this season's battle.
  • Ole Miss is hoping to continue their recent success against the Tigers, despite trailing in the all-time series 22-56.
  • The Rebels have won four of the last six meetings, including each of the last two clashes. The two sides have a lengthy history of five-set matches, with eight of the last 11 meetings going the distance.

LAST TIME OUT
Despite a pair of narrow set losses, the Rebels dropped their SEC opener, 3-0 at Arkansas on Sunday.

The Rebels put pressure on the Razorbacks and had a set point in the opening set, but dropped it 29-27, leading the Razorbacks to pull away, despite a late third set charge from the visitors.

Payton Brgoch and Julia Dyess led the way for the offense with 12 kills and hitting percentages over .400, with Dyess adding 12 digs for her first double-double of the season.

NIE-FENSE
Following a standout defensive performance in Houston, Cammy Niesen earned SEC weekly honors for the first time since 2022, as the junior libero was named the SEC Co-Defensive Player of the Week on September 23.

Niesen tallied 58 digs and 13 assists, while recording the 1,000th dig of her career during her award-winning weekend. Niesen was particularly impactful in the five-set win over Houston, with 19 digs and six assists, as well as notching 21 digs in the win over Texas A&M Commerce. With another 20-dig performance against Arkansas, Niesen has now tallied four consecutive matches of 15 or more digs for the first time since Nov. 2022.

FAMILY AFFAIR
Blocking runs in the Ratliff family. Over her career, Ole Miss middle blocker Sasha Ratliff has quickly climbed into the top-10 in the record books, ranking second all-time in the rally scoring era with 433 total blocks, first in block assists with 347 and second in solo blocks with 86. A dominant force at the net, Ratliff has tallied 100-plus blocks in each of her last three seasons and is looking to do it a fourth straight time as she enters her fifth year as a Rebel. Her knack for blocking comes from her father, Theo, who was a shot blocker too. One of basketball's best, he ranks 20th in NBA history with nearly 2,000 blocks in his 16-year career.

CLIMBING THE LADDER
Several Rebels are poised to etch their names in the all-time record books in 2024 across multiple different metrics.

Sasha Ratliff and Payton Brgoch are seeking to end their careers at No. 1 and No. 2 on the all-time blocks list (post rally scoring), with Ratliff currently standing at No. 2 (433) and Brgoch at No. 3 (393).

Ratliff needs three more blocks to set the all-time record held by Nakeyta Clair (2012-15), while Brgoch is right behind the duo in third all-time. Ratliff and Brgoch also rank 4th and 5th respectively on the combined blocks list.

CAN YOU DIG IT
After another tremendous week, junior libero Cammy Niesen continues to rewrite the record books by rising up the top-10 all-time in the rally scoring era.

Niesen stands at 1,079 career digs, which ranks seventh all-time in the rally scoring era and 12th all-time between both eras. Niesen is just 86 digs away from passing Elena Garcia and moving into sixth in the rally scoring era and just 12 away from passing Kristi Wilkinson for 12th on the combined ledger.

In addition, Niesen became the 16th in program history to reach the 1,000-dig milestone in the win over Houston, with an additional year of eligibility still to come.
