Volleyball Makes SEC Home Opening Statement in Win Over Tennessee

10/5/2024 | Volleyball

OXFORD, Miss. – Behind career-highs from Nia Washington and Mokihana Tufono, the Ole Miss volleyball program earned a key SEC victory, defeating Tennessee, 3-1 on Friday night at the Gillom Center.

The Rebels (11-3, 1-1 SEC), took down the Lady Volunteers (8-5, 1-2 SEC) for the first time since 2019, behind 20 kills Washington and 54 assists from Tufono. Shayla Meyer also added a double-double of 14 kills and 11 digs, while Cammy Niesen added 17 digs.

Behind a strong crowd and some renewed energy, the Rebels matched the Vols serve-for-serve to open the day. The first set featured 11 ties to open the day, before the Rebels finally extended the lead to 13-11 behind kills from Julia Dyess and Meyer. That lead would only increase as the Rebels went on a 5-1 run, with kills from Sasha Ratliff and Meyer to lead 21-15. An error from Tennessee ended the set, in favor of the Rebels, 25-19.

Tennessee would mount a push in the second and quickly take control, building a 13-5 advantage. The set proved to a be a perfect combination of strong hitting from the visitors and a sub-.100 hitting percentage for the Rebels. Ultimately, the Lady Vols responded with a 25-13 second set win.

Head coach Bre Henry and the Rebels quickly regrouped and matched the energy of the Vols in the third set. After a 5-5 start, the Rebels broke through, with Ratliff recording a kill to kick start an 8-1 run. Washington continued to pace the offense with seven kills in the third set alone, as the Rebels kept their counterparts at a reasonable distance and earned another 25-19 set victory.

With a chance at a key conference victory, the home side rose to the occasion to put away the Vols. In a set that featured numerous ties and mirrored the first, the Rebels broke a one-point edge for the first time and led 12-10. Several Rebels helped deliver some timely kills, including three of Payton Brgoch's 11 kills. After Tennessee saved one match point, Meyer helped close out the win with a kill to finish off a 25-22 set.

Ole Miss continues a three-match SEC homestand, hosting LSU on Sunday at 2 p.m. CT at the Gillom Athletic Performance Center.
