Men’s Golf Finishes Second at Valero Texas Collegiate

9/23/2024 | Men's Golf

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – In possibly one of the deepest fields this season in collegiate golf, the Ole Miss men’s golf program walked away from the Valero Texas Collegiate with a solo second finish at 840 (-24). Senior Cohen Trolio and junior Cameron Tankersley each finished inside the top-10 with Trolio taking solo fourth, and Tankersley finishing tied for eighth.

The field included eight teams in the Bushnell/Golfweek Division 1 Coaches Poll including No. 1 Auburn, No. 3 Virginia, and No. 4 Vanderbilt.

It was a tough scoring day for the Rebels as they couldn’t generate enough momentum shooting 287 (-1). Trolio had the low round of the day for Ole Miss carding a final round 70 (-2). His 206 (-10) tied his career-low 54-hole score which he set at the SEC Championship – Stroke Play in 2022.

“This is the second straight tournament that we have been in a great position to win and weren’t quite able to finish it off” said head coach Chris Malloy. “We will get back and regroup and figure out what we need to do to just get a little better next time out. As disappointed as we are not to win, there are so many positives to take away from this week and build on. This group is really close to playing elite golf.”

It was another solid performance for Tankersley who picked up his second top-10 finish of the season. He shot a final round 72 (E) and battled back with four birdies on his back nine.

Scoring was tough on Monday for Michael La Sasso, but the junior from Raleigh finished tied 11th at 212 (-4). Kye Meeks finished at even par for the tournament in a tie for 32nd. Tom Fischer carded a 218 (+2) which included an opening round 69. Fischer finished tied 44th. Collins Trolio competed as an individual for the second straight tournament and finished T63 shooting 222 (+6).
