Men’s Golf Sits Solo Second After Day One in Knoxville

9/6/2024 | Men's Golf

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – It was a successful opening day for the Ole Miss men's golf program as the team sits solo second, posting an 11-under score of (269) after day one at the Visit Knoxville Collegiate. The Rebels were led by the trio of Michael La Sasso, Kye Meeks, and Cameron Tankersley who all sit inside the top-five after round one.

"I was really impressed with our group today," said head coach Chris Malloy. "Obviously we had a couple of guys get it rolling but as a group we left a lot of shots out there and still managed to put ourselves in a good spot with two round to go."

Junior Michael La Sasso led the way for Rebels firing an opening round 65, placing him in a tie for second. La Sasso kick started his round on the par-5 fourth making an eagle to get into red figures. He followed that up with a birdie on five, then went back-to-back again on 10 and 11. He would birdie 13 before dropping two shots placing him at four-under through 15. He rebounded over the final three holes with a birdie at the last to shoot five-under.

Kye Meeks and Cameron Tankersley both put together solid rounds each shooting 66, placing them in a tie for fifth. Meeks started with a bogey on two but fired off five birdies across the rest of his round. He shot 32 coming in, making three birdies over his final nine holes. Much like his personality, Tankersley was calm and collected shooting four-under in his opening round. He carded six birdies on the day including two of his final three holes.

Tom Fischer and junior transfer Cohen Trolio both shot 72 on the day for a round of two-over. Fischer shot even par on his front nine before falling to three-over through 15. He would respond, finishing his final three holes one-under. Trolio weathered the storm most of the day, carding three birdies and battling back from a double on 11.

Collins Trolio who is competing as an individual carded a one-over (71) on the day and sits T37 after 18 holes of play. In total the Rebels recorded 21 birdies and one eagle on the day.
