Men’s Golf Wraps up Visit Knoxville Collegiate with Three Top-10 Finishes
9/8/2024 | Men's Golf
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – In a tournament full of SEC heavy hitters, Ole Miss men's golf came out second in the final day of the Visit Knoxville Collegiate at Tennessee National Golf Club, after firing a 283 (+3) and end the weekend at 819 (-21). Three Rebels carded top-10 finishes in the season opening tournament in Cameron Tankersley, Michael La Sasso and Kye Meeks.
"Unfortunately, we weren't sharp enough to finish the tournament off how we would have liked. Too many silly mistakes cost us down the stretch," said head coach Chris Malloy. "To win an event like this, you need to be sharp for three rounds and we were just a little short. However, so many positives to build on going forward this fall. I really like this group and what I saw out of them this week."
A career weekend for Tankersley, firing off an even final round 70 (E) gave the junior is best low 54 score of 202 (-6). Finishing in second place also marked his highest career finish, as he totaled six birdies on the day to propel him towards the top of the leaderboard.
La Sasso fired off the best round of the day for the Rebels, notching four birdies total to wrap up his round at 68 (-2) and weekend 204 (-6) to finish tied for third. The top five finish is the sixth of his career, after he earned four last year.
A strong start to the year for Meeks, he carded a bogey free back-nine to claim sole possession of seventh going 71 (+1) on the day and 205 (-5) total for his fourth top-10 finish at Ole Miss. The tournament marked a career-low 54-hole finish for the Mississippi native.
In his first tournament as a Rebel, Cohen Trolio shot 74 (+4) to end his weekend with a total score of 212 (+4) and tied for 29th. Rounding out the squad, Tom Fischer fired off a round of 76 (+6) to end his time in Knoxville at 215 (+5)
The Rebels return to action in two weeks, taking a trip to the Lone Star state for the Valero Texas Collegiate. Malloy and Co. tee off from San Antonio starting on Sept. 21 from the Oaks Course at TPC.
