Women’s Basketball Falls Shy of Comeback Against No. 18 Alabama at SJB Pavilion
1/12/2025 | Women's Basketball
OXFORD, Miss. – Ole Miss women's basketball dropped its matchup against No. 18/19 Alabama, 84-78, despite the Rebels outrebounding and outpassing the Crimson Tide at the SJB Pavilion on Sunday evening.
Starr Jacobs paced Ole Miss (11-5, 2-2 SEC) with her second double-double of the season, but Alabama (16-2, 3-1 SEC) was hot from 3-point range all game which proved to be the difference-maker in the competition on Sunday.
Despite finding itself down by as much as 12 points in the second half, Ole Miss' offense kept pace with Alabama in the fourth quarter to help bring the score within two possessions. Although the Rebels scored 32 points in the fourth quarter, there wasn't enough time on the clock to back an Ole Miss victory.
Jacobs paced the team by generating a season and Ole Miss career-high 21 points and 12 rebounds, to go alongside a trio of assists. For Jacobs, it's the 28th double-double of her overall career, which ranks second among active Rebels behind Madison Scott.
Scott, meanwhile, made Ole Miss history midway through the first quarter, scoring her 1,500th career point on a jump shot from the elbow. Scott is only the eighth Rebel to accumulate that many points, all while at Ole Miss. Overall, she's the 11th player to score their 1,500th career point in Oxford. The Indian Head, Maryland, native finished the game with eight points, a team-leading five assists and seven rebounds. Scott has now led Ole Miss in assists 40 times in her career, amounting to almost 30% of her total career games.
Kennedy Todd-Williams had her second impressive showcase of the week, dropping 11 points, her 11th game in double-digits this season. Todd-Williams also teetered on the edge of a double-double with eight rebounds, which would have marked her first of the season.
Guard-forward combo KK Deans and Christeen Iwuala added a spark to the Ole Miss offense off the bench, scoring 14 and 11 points, respectively. Deans drained a trio of threes, which marked her fifth game this season making at least three from behind the arc. Iwuala was a perfect 5-for-5 from the field, joining Scott as the only active Rebels to shoot perfect from the field with at least five attempts. Scott also accomplished that feat this season against Mississippi Valley State.
The Rebels opened with a scoring barrage in the first quarter as they claimed seven unanswered points in the opening minute and a half. Todd-Williams remained on fire from long distance, making two 3-pointers in the period. She's made seven shots from beyond the arc in two games. Her six points led the Rebels to a 17-14 lead entering the second quarter.
Alabama would take over from there and make a push for the lead. The Crimson Tide would take hold of a 31-27 lead at halftime after a back-and-forth effort by both teams in the second quarter.
The Rebels delivered on a turnaround third quarter, scoring 19 points. Thienou and KK Deans headed the charge in the third period with six and five points, respectively. Despite Ole Miss' valiant third quarter, the Rebels found themselves trailing by 10 going into the final 10 minutes.
Jacobs led Ole Miss' comeback efforts in the fourth quarter, as Ole Miss and Alabama went shot-for-shot to close the game. The Rebels scored 32 points in the fourth quarter and dwindled the Crimson Tide's lead to single digits. Jacobs exploded for 15 points in the quarter, the most by a Rebel in a single quarter this season. Five of Jacobs' points in the quarter came from the free throw line, of which she went 7-for-7 in the game.
The Rebels were able to take advantage of a turnover by the Crimson Tide to move within five points of the lead. Jacobs reignited the crowd after an offensive rebound led to her getting fouled in the post before making both free throws. She would pull that off another time with under a minute remaining in the game.
Ole Miss was forced into intentional fouling within the final minute of action. The Rebels' offense remained alive, with Deans and Sadler making a three each in the final 15 seconds of the game, but Nye would make one last free throw to secure Alabama's victory, 84-78.
Ole Miss will look to reenter the win column with its third straight home matchup against Florida on Jan. 16. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m. CT and will be broadcast on SEC Network.
