Volleyball Drops Wild Match at Mississippi State

STARKVILLE, Miss. – Despite a heroic defensive effort, the Ole Miss volleyball program dropped a 3-1 decision at Mississippi State on Friday night at the Newell-Grissom Building.
Gabi Placide led all players on the floor with 26 kills to pace the Rebels (9-7, 1-4 SEC) offense, while Keirstyn Carlton added a career-high 12 kills on .400 hitting. Mokihana Tufono recorded the third, 40-assist, 20-dig performance of her career, with 47 assists and 22 digs, while Cammy Niesen led the defense with 24 digs. Shayla Meyer also added a double-double of 10 kills and 20 digs.
As a unit, the Rebels tallied 92 digs, the most Sept. 14, 2023 against Tulsa. Lindsey Mangelson led the Bulldogs (13-2, 3-2 SEC) with 16 kills.
While Placide was able to generate a pair of early kills to build a 6-5 lead, the Rebels lost momentum on a 5-1 run by Mississippi State and fell into a hole. The Rebel offense struggled to generate a response, hitting just .022 in the opening frame, as the hosts pulled ahead 22-16. Carlton was able to create some late life with a kill and a block, but the Rebels ultimately dropped the opener, 25-20.
The Rebels regrouped quickly to open the second set, taking an 8-4 lead behind three early kills from Carlton. Carlton continued to roll into the media timeout with another three kills, as the Rebels surged to a 16-12 advantage. Nevertheless, the hosts punched back with a 5-0 run to retake the lead.
The two sides traded points until the Bulldogs secured two set points at 24-22. Placide picked up a kill and contributed on a block to save both. After a Mississippi State point, Placide saved her third set point and a kill by Shayla Meyer gave Ole Miss their first set point shortly thereafter. The hosts saved the first, then Meyer got herself a second chance at 28-27, that was initially ruled as a point for the Rebels, but was overturned on a challenge. The Bulldogs used that momentum swing and secured the set, 30-28.
With their backs against the wall, the Rebels were sparked by a strong run of serve from Bella Bonanno to take an early 7-4 lead. While the Bulldogs were able to get the match level, Placide began to heat up. The junior tallied 11 kills in the third set alone, the most by any Rebel in one set this season. Her efforts led the Rebels to a 22-19 advantage. Needing to close out the set, Placide tallied two more kills and the Rebels forced a fourth set, 25-22.
The momentum appeared to be squarely with the Rebels who surged to a 17-10 advantage in the fourth set. Placide and Meyer each tallied three kills, while Niesen added a free ball kill to give the Rebels hope. However, the hosts began to chip away, with 3-0 and 5-0 runs to cut the Rebel lead to 20-17. Slowly but surely, the Bulldogs climbed back into the match, with service errors keeping the Rebels afloat. A Mississippi State service error saved match point, but the Rebels could save a second one just moments later, as the Bulldogs escaped with a 26-24 win.
The Rebels return home to welcome No. 17 Tennessee to the Gillom Athletics Performance Center. The match is set for Sunday at 2 p.m. CT and will be streamed via SEC Network Plus.
