Volleyball Falls to No. 17 Tennessee

10/12/2025 | Volleyball

OXFORD, Miss. – The Ole Miss volleyball program dropped a 3-0 decision to No. 17 Tennessee on Sunday afternoon at the Gillom Athletics Performance Center.

Shayla Meyer paced the Rebels (9-8, 1-5 SEC) with 10 kills and six digs, while Keirstyn Carlton added eight kills and two blocks. Hayden Kubik led the Lady Volunteers (13-2, 4-1 SEC) with 13 kills.

While the day started with a promising pair of kills from Carly Paugh, the Rebels fell into an early hole on a 7-1 run by the Lady Vols. The Tennessee lead ballooned to 20-11, but the Rebels were able to fight back to cut the lead to five with kills from Meyer, Mokihana Tufono and Carlton. However, the visitors were able to stop the bleeding and took the opener 25-18.

A quick start to the second set by the Rebels provided some hope, as Paugh tallied a kill and a block for a 4-1 lead. While Tennessee answered with a 4-0 run, the visitors tallied multiple errors and allowed the Rebels to retake an 8-5 lead. The two sides were tied at 13-13, before back-to-back points from the Lady Vols took them into the media timeout with a lead. A pair of kills from Gabi Placide and another kill from Carlton kept it close, but a final 4-0 run by Tennessee put the set away for the visitors, 25-18.

The Rebels turned in a strong effort in the third set, sparked by a big performance from Melia Johnson, who entered the match off the bench in the third set. Johnson tallied six kills on .333 hitting, while adding four digs in the period. While the Lady Vols earned a 21-15 lead, two kills by Johnson and an ace from Bella Bonanno sparked a 4-0 run to put the pressure on Tennessee. The visitors would deliver the final blow, pulling away to win 25-20.

The Rebels head out on the road for a two-match swing, beginning at No. 25 Missouri on Friday, Sept. 17 at 7 p.m. CT. The match will be streamed via SEC Network Plus.
