COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Ole Miss volleyball program dropped the final road match of the regular season, falling 3-0 to South Carolina on Wednesday night at the Carolina Volleyball Center.
Carly Paugh led the Rebels (12-13, 4-10 SEC) with a career-high 10 kills on .300 hitting, while Gabi Placide recorded 10 kills and 11 digs. Nia Hall led the Gamecocks (10-14, 4-10 SEC) with nine kills.
Both sides got off to sluggish starts on the offensive end, but the Rebels were the first to emerge with a lead. Bella Bonanno put the Rebels ahead with some terrific serving, tallying two aces and sparking a 5-0 run to take a 12-8 lead. After a kill from Tessa Jones and a South Carolina error expanded the lead to 15-10, but the Gamecocks fought back to retake the lead at 18-17. Ultimately, the hosts were able to pull away, taking the opening set 25-21.
Things appeared to be headed in the right direction to open the second set, as the Rebels built a 11-6 lead on the back of four kills from Placide. However, the Gamecocks were able to erase much of the deficit almost immediately with a 5-1 run. The two sides traded points, before more strong serving from Bonanno, who had three aces on the day, picked up another ace for an 18-15 lead. However, the Gamecocks delivered a strong response, punching back and pulling away for a 25-21 win.
Paugh was able to find some early momentum and quickly reached a career-high in kills, but the Gamecocks built a 9-4 lead. The Rebels had a response with two aces from Placide and helped cut the lead to 10-8, but the Gamecocks ultimately weathered the storm and pulled away for a 25-15 win.
The Rebels wrap up the regular season on Friday, welcoming Florida to town for a 1 p.m. CT match up. The match will be streamed via SEC Network Plus.
