DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – No. 13/13 Ole Miss women’s basketball vacates the Coast 2 Coast Classic with a pair of victories after defeating George Mason, 81-67, in game two of the event on Saturday evening in Daytona Beach, Florida.
The Rebels (7-0, 0-0 SEC) are undefeated through seven games for the first time since 2008-09, the first time in head coach Yolett McPhee-McCuin’s tenure at the helm. It’s only the third time since the 2000-01 season that Ole Miss has begun a season this hot and 13th time ever. McPhee-McCuin joins former head coach Ron Aldy as the only coaches in the 21st century to lead the Rebels to 7-0 starts multiple times. Her, Aldy and Van Chancellor are the only Ole Miss women’s basketball coaches to lead their teams to that mark multiple times in program history.
Additionally, Ole Miss went undefeated in through a full month of November for the first time since 2008-09.
Forward Christeen Iwuala once again paved the way for Ole Miss’ success, leading the team in scoring and rebounding, recording 16 and 10, respectively. For Iwuala, she’s recorded a double-double in three of her past five outings. Her first career double-double came earlier this month against Southern. The dominant forward has established herself as one of the top frontcourt players in the SEC through the nonconference season.

Alongside Iwuala, Debreasha Powe excelled with a season-high 14 points on a 50 percent shooting clip. Cotie McMahon joined the formers in double-digit scoring with 14 herself. McMahon and Iwuala have continued to have some of the best season scoring debuts in program history, as no Rebel duo has scored at least 10 points through the first seven games since at least 1997. The last time an individual player scored double-digit points in the first seven games came in 2020-21.

Latasha Lattimore also posed as a scoring threat, having had her second game of double-digit scoring with 11 points on top of seven rebounds.
The Rebels held the Patriots scoreless until the first media timeout, in which time they built a 7-0 lead. Powe built that lead with two impressive jump shots, including a three, while Ole Miss stifled George Mason’s offense. After another three, this time from Sira Thienou, George Mason would finally score with under three minutes to play in the first. After some back-and-forth, Jayla Murray capped the quarter with a floater to give Ole Miss a 16-8 lead to enter the second quarter.

Ole Miss slowed in the first part of the second quarter as George Mason began to mount a comeback. The Rebels halted that momentum after the midway mark of the quarter, scoring eight unanswered to retake a comfortable lead. The teams traded more baskets throughout the remainder of the quarter, as Ole Miss’ Tianna Thomspon scored a pair of layups with just two minutes remaining. Peterson closed the scoring for Ole Miss in the first quarter with a euro step floater as the halftime score sat at 38-28 in the Rebels’ favor.
Cotie McMahon opened the third quarter scoring with a jumper from the elbow, adding to Ole Miss’ lead. McMahon continued to dominate in the third, adding nine total points in the period. In the latter half of the quarter, Powe took over to score seven points of her own as the Rebels extended their lead to 62-41 entering the final quarter of play. Ole Miss scored 24 points in the quarter, it’s most in any quarter in the game.
After George Mason once again began the fourth quarter strong, Ole Miss found its rhythm after an Iwuala layup. From there, the teams would alternate baskets as the Rebels refused to give up their lead. McMahon guided the Rebels in the quarter, scoring five points to continue giving Ole Miss a lead. Iwuala matched McMahon’s efforts with five points of her own, but it was Lattimore who solidified the final score of 81-67 with a trio of free throws.
Ole Miss is back in Oxford for a high stakes matchup against No. 19/19 Notre Dame at the SJB Pavilion on Dec. 4. The game will be broadcast on ESPN2 with tipoff set for 8 p.m. CT.
