Volleyball Earns Sweep of Georgia in Athens for First Time Since 2008

11/7/2025 | Volleyball

ATHENS, Ga. – Behind a sensational offensive performance, the Ole Miss volleyball program earned a sweep of Georgia, 3-0, in Athens for the first time in 17 years on Friday night at Stegeman Coliseum.

Gabi Placide paced the Rebels (12-12, 4-9 SEC) with 18 kills on a sizzling .324 hitting percentage, while adding eight digs. Shayla Meyer also continued her dominance in Athens with 14 kills on .303 hitting, while Carly Paugh shined with seven kills on .600 hitting and two blocks. Mokihana Tufono was also dominant, tallying 42 assists and 7 digs. Bianna Muoneke led the way for the Bulldogs (15-8, 7-6 SEC) with 12 kills.

The night began with a shaky start for the Rebels, who fell into an early 9-3 hole. Nevertheless, the Rebels would start to chip away at the Georgia advantage, as Meyer got hot first, with a pair of kills that helped spark a rally. Paugh provided tremendous energy in the set, going a perfect four-for-four on her swings and the Rebels cut the lead to 13-11. Placide was the next to find her groove, going for four kills late in the frame and tallying a service ace to tie the set at 20-20. Placide's ace was part of a 7-1 run to end the set, as the Rebels surged to take the opener, 25-21.

The momentum from the first set immediately carried over into the second, as the Rebels built an early 7-2 advantage. The Rebels diversified the offensive attack, with Meyer and Placide continuing to roll, while Melia Johnson jumped in the action to make it 14-7. The Rebels controlled the set from there, hitting .351 in the frame and stifling any Bulldog run. Placide and Johnson combined for five of the six points to end the frame, as Ole Miss comfortably took the set, 25-18.

The hosts prevented the Rebels from pulling away to start the third set, but Meyer remained hot, tallying four kills to tie the set at 7-7. A 4-0 run by Georgia put pressure on the Rebels, but did not break their resolve. The Rebels chipped away as Placide's kill output soared. It would be a critical block from Meyer and Paugh that completed the run back to tie it at 15-15. Placide continued to shoulder the offense, but it would be Meyer to close out the match, picking up two kills in a 4-0 run to take the decisive set, 25-22.

The Rebels are set to compete in the final road match of the regular season, traveling to South Carolina on Wednesday for a 6 p.m. CT match. The match will be streamed via SEC Network Plus.
