Women’s Basketball Falls to Kansas State at the Bill Snyder Classic
12/7/2025 | Women's Basketball
ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – No. 13/13 Ole Miss women's basketball suffered its first loss of the season, falling in a tight 61-60 contest to Kansas State on Sunday afternoon in St. Joseph, Missouri.
The Rebels (8-1, 0-0 SEC) struggled offensively for most of the outing, despite opening strong in the first moments of the game. The Rebels had more assists, blocks, steals, and had half the turnovers that the Wildcats (6-5, 0-0 Big 12) did, but it wasn't enough to pull off the victory.
Cotie McMahon was a woman on a mission against the Wildcats, scoring 22 points with eight rebounds. She has at least 20 points in four games so far this season, making her the first Rebel since 2020-21 to have that many games north of 20 points in the first nine games of the season. She's also the first Rebel since Shandricka Sessom in 2015-16 to have double-digit points in the first nine games of the season.
Tianna Thompson had her best outing as a Rebel, scoring a season-high 12 points off the bench. She had a pair of clutch 3-pointers that kept Ole Miss competitive throughout the game, but also showed poise in the post, making several tough layups.
Ole Miss' defense opened strong against Kansas State. After an initial bucket early, the Wildcats went over four scoreless minutes as the Rebels scored 10 unanswered. Sira Thienou started well for the Rebels, scoring the first six points, a converted and-one and a deep range snipe. As the Rebels built their lead, the Wildcats missed four field goals before the media timeout. After their hot start, the Rebels cooled after the timeout. Kansas State found a rhythm in that span and narrowed the margin, tying the game at 15 apiece at the conclusion of the first period.
The Rebels remained cold to start the second quarter, not making a field goal until Thompson drained a 3-pointer two minutes in. Her bucket reignited Ole Miss' offense, who went on a 12-0 run into the latter half of the quarter. McMahon paced the team with seven points in the quarter, including a three. However, the same story repeated itself from the first period, as Kansas State returned to a scoring onslaught to minimize Ole Miss' lead. McMahon scored another jumper in the final minute as the Wildcats added a free throw, giving the Rebels a 31-28 halftime lead.
Neither team found any offensive groove in the third quarter. Kansas State outscored Ole Miss 14-11, but the teams remained tied at the end of a quarter for the second time of the game, this time at 42 points apiece. Thompson and Jayla Murray kept the Rebels in striking distance with four combined free throws. McMahon scored her 11th point of the game with six seconds on the clock to force the tie entering the final period of play.
The fourth quarter began with McMahon converting on three free throws, which were returned in toe by Kansas State. Thompson made her second three of the evening to give Ole Miss a two-possession lead, but the Wildcats once again responded with buckets of their own to reclaim the lead. McMahon continued to put the Rebels on her back, scoring four points off jump shots to keep the game close. After the teams once again traded free throws, McMahon scored a layup in the final 20 seconds to give the Rebels a one-point lead. However, Kansas State's Brandie Harrod shot the dagger with two seconds on the clock, a tough layup, fashioning the final score of 61-60.
The Rebels are back home for back-to-back matchups against Wofford on Dec. 13 and South Carolina State the next day. Tipoff on the 13th is set for noon CT with the next game slated for a 2 p.m. tip. Both games will be streamed on SECN+.
