No. 1 Men’s Golf Earns Third Top 2 Finish of the Season at Puerto Rico Classic

2/12/2025 | Men's Golf

RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico – The No. 1 Ole Miss men’s golf team concluded play at the Puerto Rico Classic Wednesday, securing their third top 2 finish of the season. The Rebels have finished second or better in every event this year as four players finished inside the top 25.

“We have a ton of things to build on from this week” said head coach Chris Malloy. “Although we didn't find a way to win, we put ourselves in the thick of it down the stretch and will be better from it. It's tough to win with as many big numbers and unforced errors that we had over the final two rounds. We will get back and switch our focus to competing in a great field in Cabo.”

Scoring conditions were tough Wednesday with only four teams eclipsing double digit under-par scores on the day. Ole Miss carded a (-6, 282) in the final round but weren’t quite able to get the momentum rolling with the putter.

Ole Miss was led all week by junior Cohen Trolio who set a new career-low 54-hole score of 205. Trolio shot 11-under for the tournament, finishing in fifth place. He began the week with two rounds of 66 and capped off the tournament with 15 birdies on the week. His previous career-low 54-hole score came this past fall at the Valero Texas Collegiate where he shot (-10, 206).

Three other Rebels finished inside the top 25 in Michael La Sasso, Kye Meeks, and Cameron Tankersley. La Sasso notched a score of (-7, 209), securing his fifth top 15 finish on the year. Kye Meeks had the low round of the day for Ole Miss, carding a three-under 69. Meeks finished tied for 16th with a score of (-6, 210). Cameron Tankersley battled on day three in Rio Grande, finishing tied for 22nd.

Collins Trolio and Tom Fischer wrapped up play Wednesday shooting over par for the week. Trolio, who is competing in his fourth tournament as an individual for Ole Miss this season, carded back-to-back rounds of one-under 71 to finish the tournament at one over. Tom Fischer ended the week with momentum after a final round of two-under 70. Fischer tallied five birdies on the afternoon.

Ole Miss returns to action March 2-4 at the Cabo Collegiate. Twin Dolphin Club will be the site of the tournament in Los Cabos, Mexico.
