Track & Field Puts Together Outstanding First Day of New Mexico Classic
2/7/2025 | Track and Field
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Ole Miss track & field claimed a pair of first-place finishes and a handful of highly-ranked individual performances to cap an excellent Day One of the New Mexico Classic on Friday.
Junior Tarik Robinson-O'Hagan – fresh off his second consecutive appearance on The Bowerman watch list – joined elite company in college throwing history, winning on a record-shattering heave of 24.17m/79-03.75, a half-foot better than his previous school record 23.99m/78-08.50 earlier this season.
That blast ranks Robinson-O'Hagan 12th-best in collegiate history and only the third in SEC history to break 24 meters, while this season he ranks fourth worldwide and third in the NCAA. Including either his NCAA title-winning shot put throw of 21.05m/69-00.75 from last March or his 21.02m/68-11.75 heave from last week, Robinson O'Hagan is now one of three men in collegiate history to record 21 meters in the shot put and 24 meters in the weight throw along with North Dakota State's Payton Otterdahl (shot put 21.81m/71-06.75, weight throw 24.11m/79-01.25) and Ohio State's Dan Taylor (shot put 21.33m/69-11.75, weight throw 24.01m/78-09.25).
Junior Bryson Smith followed in third at 21.75m/71-04.25, while senior Jake Dalton took eighth place with a career best of 20.47m/67-2 – improving upon his spot at No. 9 in Ole Miss history.
The men also found success in the high jump from Fulton, Mississippi native Arvesta Troupe. Troupe finished in first place and recorded an overall career-best of 2.21m/7-3, breaking his previous PR earlier this season and remaining near the top of the national leaderboards at third nationally. In Ole Miss history, Troupe's clearance today gives him sole possession of third all-time indoors.
In the men's 200-meter dash, three freshmen recorded impressive performances. Wesley Todd finished 10th in the unseeded race at a career-best 21.21, making him the fastest Rebel freshman all-time, fifth overall in Ole Miss history indoors and fourth among SEC freshmen this season. Meanwhile, in the 200-meter dash invite, Jordan Urrutia finished 12th at a career-best of 21.24, ranking him seventh in Ole Miss history and fifth among SEC freshmen this year.
Fellow freshman Tarique Wright took 26th in the unseeded races with a 21.67 in his first collegiate 200-meter dash.
In the women's weight throw, sophomore Skylar Soli finished fourth at a career-best of 20.96m/ 68-09.25, climbing to eighth in Ole Miss history, No. 23 in the 2025 NCAA rankings and fifth in the SEC. Fellow sophomore Akaoma Odeluga followed closely in fifth at 20.68m/67-10.25.
Other notable performances by Rebel women include junior Lizzie Hatton, who finished eighth in the long jump with a career-best of 6.08m/19-11.50 to climb to No. 12 in Ole Miss history indoors, and freshman Lily Beattie, who finished tied for sixth in the pole vault at 4.02m/13-02.25 – which ties her previous career-best at No. 8 in Ole Miss history indoors.
After the first day of action, the 10th-ranked Rebel men currently sit in third place of the team standings at 33.3 points – trailing only No. 3 USC (48.5) and No. 19 Arizona State (34). The Ole Miss women own 13.5 points following Day One and are in 13th place.
