No. 1 Men’s Golf Opens Spring Season at Puerto Rico Classic

2/9/2025 | Men's Golf

RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico – After one of the most historic fall runs in Ole Miss men's golf history, the No. 1 Rebels have their sights set on history this spring as they open play at the Puerto Rico Classic Feb. 10-12 in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico.

Purdue University will host the 32nd playing of the event with Grande Reserve Golf Club being the site for the fourth straight year.

BEHIND THE ARCHITECTURE
Designed by former PGA Tour pro Tom Kite, Grand Reserve Golf Club hosts the Puerto Rico Open every year and will host the Puerto Rico Classic for the fourth consecutive year. The track differs from your typical golf course in the United States given the tropical climate (the famous El Yunque rainforest is just five miles to the south). The course is set to play Par 72 at 7,152 yards.

HISTORY ON THE HORIZON
While the Rebels have their eyes set on a national title, they have a chance to do something this week only one other Ole Miss team has even accomplished. The last men's golf team to win three consecutive tournaments was the 2007-08 team that won three consecutive events in the fall of 2007. The Rebels captured victory at the Memphis Intercollegiate (Oct. 8-9, 2007), the Squire Creek Invitational (Oct. 15-16, 2007) and the Mason Rudolph Intercollegiate (Oct. 21-23, 2007). With their back-to-back victories to close out the fall at the Hamptons Intercollegiate (Oct. 7-8) and the Fallen Oak Collegiate Invitational (Oct. 19-21), the 2024-25 team looks to join rare company in the Rebel history books.

THOSE BOYS CAN PLAY
The key to solid team golf is having a lineup where anyone whether their No. 1 or No. 5 on the chart can go out and put the group on their back any given day. That has been the recipe for success for Ole Miss this season as Michael La Sasso, Cameron Tankersley, Cohen Trolio, Kye Meeks and Tom Fischer have all finished inside the top five at least once so far this season. Four of the five in the starting lineup for the Rebels are ranked inside the Scoreboard Individual Ranking top 35: La Sasso at No. 3, Cohen Trolio at No. 23, Tankersley at No. 32 and Kye Meeks at No. 33.

Trolio, Tankersley and Meeks all set new career-best finishes and career-low 54-hole scores during the fall. Tom Fischer rounded out October with back-to-back top four finishes, giving him a new career-best finish of T4 at the Hamptons Intercollegiate and Fallen Oak. Michael La Sasso broke through for his first collegiate victory back in October at the Hamptons Intercollegiate (Oct. 7-8). The junior from Raleigh, North Carolina dominated the field shooting (-15, 201) winning the event by 11 strokes.

BROTHERLY LOVE
Golf is one of the more unique games that can be played as an individual or as a member of a team. When you pair family with it, the game doesn't get much sweeter. For the sibling duo of Cohen and Collins Trolio, having the chance to play collegiate golf for the same university over the next two seasons is something they'll cherish forever.

"We have a really cool relationship and have been around each other and our best friends" Cohen said. "I missed him when I was gone and we'd talk on the phone most nights, but it's cool to be able to come to a school and play together and learn from other people."

"It could not have worked out any better because I never saw us getting the chance to play collegiately together" Collins said. "I learned to play the game by watching Cohen so it's cool now that we get to compete against each other and play on the same team."

PRESEASON BUZZ TO NUMBER ONE
Ole Miss earned preseason nods from Golf Channel with the No. 10 preseason ranking in the nation. The Rebels were one of 11 SEC teams inside the top 25 to start the 2024-25 campaign. Ole Miss claimed the No. 1 ranking on October 23, 2024, and have been the unanimous No. 1 since November 1, 2024.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS
The Rebels look to make it back to postseason play after heartbreak last season at the Stanford Regional. Ole Miss fell one stroke from the cut line to advance to the NCAA Championship. The team finished the 2023 regular season with seven top five finishes, 16 individual top 10 finishes, and a team victory at the Seminole Intercollegiate down in Tallahassee. The Rebels carded 20 rounds under par on the season, including a 262-round score on the final day of the Visit Knoxville Collegiate. The 262 score of (-18) set the new lowest single-round score in program history. It was previously set by the 2022-23 team which shot 268 (-10) at the 2022 SEC Fall Preview.

VETERAN PRESENCE
The program returns six members from the 2023-24 roster including PING All-American and First Team All-SEC selection Michael La Sasso. Veterans Kye Meeks and Cameron Tankersley aim to build on a promising 2023-24 resume. Tom Fischer enters his junior season after a strong summer in the amateur circuit. Fischer was the 18-hole leader after round one at the 2024 U.S. Amateur at Hazeltine, making it to the round of 32 match play.

THROUGH THE PORTAL
Malloy bolstered the roster with one signee through the portal with the addition of Cohen Trolio. The junior from LSU returns to his home state and is reunited with his younger brother Collins who enters his sophomore year with the team. Trolio notched 23 events for the Tigers with a 72.46 stroke average.

FULL SWING AHEAD
After play in Puerto Rico, the Rebels will return home before heading to Mexico for the Cabo Collegiate March 2-4. Twin Dolphin Club will be the site of the tournament in Los Cabos, Mexico where Ole Miss finished tied for fifth last season.
