No. 17 Softball Drops Turbulent Opening Game to No. 6 Florida
4/11/2025 | Softball
OXFORD, Miss. – In a game that featured 24 hits and 15 runs, the No. 17 Ole Miss softball program dropped a wild, 8-7 decision to No. 6 Florida in the series opener on Friday night at the Ole Miss Softball Stadium.
Persy Llamas and Taylor Malvin each notched three hits, while Lair Beautae drove in three runs for the Rebels (30-10, 6-7 SEC). Brianna Lopez delivered 4.2 innings of relief against the Gators (36-8, 8-5 SEC), striking out four batters and allowing just one run.
The Rebels were the first to strike in what became a wild, back-and-forth affair as Jaden Pone drew a leadoff hit-by-pitch before Beautae walked to set up Lexie Brady. Brady put a ball in play that got through the legs of the Gators third baseman to score Pone and take a 1-0 lead.
From there, Llamas and Aliyah Binford delivered back-to-back RBI singles to extend the lead to 3-0. The Rebels reloaded the bases on an Angelina DeLeon single, but a line out double play got the Gators out of the inning.
However, the Gators responded with four runs in the top of the second inning to retake the advantage. Nevertheless, the Rebels quickly punched back, with singles from Malvin and Beautae, before Llamas drove in another run on a fielder's choice to tie the game at 4-4.
The tie game was short lived, as the Gators struck again, this time driving in three more runs in the top of the third inning. Lopez entered the game and helped settle things down, holding the Gators to a scoreless fourth inning.
Malvin continued her big day with a leadoff single in the fourth and Pone added another single to set up Beautae. The senior made no mistake, clobbering the first pitch she saw over the right field wall to tie the game at 7-7.
The Gators managed to answer back in the fifth inning, delivering a two-out RBI single to go ahead 8-7.
Another single by Llamas gave the Rebels a chance in the sixth inning to set up Binford. Binford launched a ball to right field that had the height for a two-run home run, but was pulled back by the Florida right fielder at the wall to keep their advantage.
Ultimately, the Rebels were unable to get any more base runners, despite a near-fair liner by Rachel Connors that was reversed to foul upon appeal and the Gators emerged victorious.
Ole Miss and Florida will return to action on Saturday, playing game two at 2 p.m. CT. The game will be streamed via SEC Network Plus.
