Former Rebel Lance Lynn Announces His Retirement From Major League Baseball

4/2/2025 | Baseball

Former Rebel pitcher and 13-year Major League Baseball veteran Lance Lynn announced his retirement Tuesday morning on his wife’s podcast.

Lynn was a two-time All-Star and won a World Series as a rookie with the St. Louis Cardinals in 2011. He played two stints for the Cardinals and spent time with the Minnesota Twins, New York Yankees, Texas Rangers, Chicago White Sox, and Los Angeles Dodgers.

The former first round pick finishes his MLB career with a record of 143-99, a 3.74 ERA, and 2,015 strikeouts over 2,006.1 innings pitched. In July of 2024 he crossed the 2,000-career strikeout mark, becoming just the sixth active and 88th pitcher all time to reach the mark.

Lynn was drafted in the first round of the 2008 Major League Draft by the Cardinals and made his debut on June 2, 2011 for St. Louis. He made 18 appearances that season for the World Series Champion Cardinals, including 10 in the playoffs. He was named an All-Star in 2012 and would return to the World Series in 2013 as a full-time member of the starting rotation.

Lynn pitched for the Cardinals until 2018 when he signed with the Minnesota Twins. He signed another free agency deal in 2019 with the Texas Rangers and put together two of the best seasons of his career in 2019 and 2020.

In 2021, Lynn signed with the Chicago White Sox and was named an All-Star for the second time after posting an 11-6 record with a 2.69 ERA in 28 starts. He finished third in Cy Young voting that season, gaining votes for the third-consecutive season.

Lynn played one and a half more seasons for the White Sox before finishing out 2023 with the Los Angeles Dodgers. He played his final season in 2024 back with the Cardinals where it all began.

Lynn pitched at Ole Miss from 2006-08, earning All-SEC honors in 2007 and 2008. He still holds the single-season strikeout record, striking out 146 batters in 2007. He ranks second all-time in career strikeouts, racking up 332 punchouts in his three seasons as a Rebel.

Lynn is also ranked fifth all-time in career games started (48), sixth in career innings pitched (298.1), seventh in career wins (22) at Ole Miss.
