No. 17 Softball Drops Heartbreaker at No. 18 Mississippi State

5/1/2025 | Softball

STARKVILLE, Miss. – The No. 17 Ole Miss softball program took a tie game into the seventh inning, but fell just short in game one against No. 18 Mississippi State, falling 3-1 on Thursday night at Nusz Park.

The Rebels (34-15, 10-12 SEC) got their lone run on an Aliyah Binford solo home run, but the Rebels could not hang on in the bottom of the seventh inning against Mississippi State (36-15, 12-10 SEC).

Both teams saw strong pitching throughout much of the night as Brianna Lopez went toe-to-toe against Mississippi State's Raelin Chaffin. Three scoreless innings began the evening for both sides, as Lopez allowed just one hit and struck out three.

In the fourth inning, the Rebels got a jolt on the offensive end as Binford led off the frame. Binford fell into an 0-2 hole, but didn't let it phase her as she launched her seventh home run of the season on the next pitch to the opposite field for a 1-0 lead.

However, the Bulldogs rallied in the bottom half of the frame after the Rebels got the first two outs. A drive to right field by Ella Wesolowski was nearly snared on the run by Lair Beautae, but her tremendous effort came up just short, as the ball got down for a game-tying double. Nevertheless, Lopez got out of the rest of the inning unscathed, finishing the evening with five strikeouts.

The Bulldogs nearly took the lead in the fifth inning, loading the bases with one out. However, Lopez made her final batter count, striking out Jessie Blaine, before Binford came in relief to secure the final out.

Both teams had their best remaining chances in the seventh inning, beginning with the Rebels. Mackenzie Pickens delivered a stinging double with one out to give Ole Miss some life. However, a well struck ball by Ashton Lansdell was corralled and the Bulldogs secured the double play at third base, which ended the inning.

After two quick outs, the Bulldogs ultimately found their spark, drawing a walk and hitting a home run by Blaine that ended the game.

Ole Miss continues play against Mississippi State on Friday at a rescheduled 11 a.m. CT, due to impending weather. The game will be streamed via SEC Network Plus.
