Track & Field’s Tarik Robinson-O’Hagan Scores Twice, Leads Rebels at Day One of NCAA Outdoor

6/11/2025 | Track and Field

EUGENE, Ore. – Ole Miss track & field junior Tarik Robinson-O'Hagan missed out on a fourth consecutive national shot put title in heartbreaking fashion, but still scored 12 important points for the Rebels on Day One of the 2025 NCAA Outdoor Championships at Oregon's Hayward Field on Wednesday.

The day started off in historic fashion for Robinson-O'Hagan in the men's hammer final. The junior and eight-time watch list member for The Bowerman finished third overall behind two powerful performances from Minnesota's Kostas Zaltos (78.08m/256-2) and Angelos Mantzouranis (76.96m/252-6) – the best finish ever by a Rebel in the men's hammer.

Robinson-O'Hagan broke 75 meters on all four of his legal throws, which included 76 on two of those tosses. His best of the day, a fifth-round bomb of 76.78m/251-11, marked a new PR of more than a meter – and it put him into rare company.

That mark not only reset his own Ole Miss record, but it moved him to No. 3 in SEC history and No. 16 in collegiate history – No. 4 among American-born collegiate hammer throwers. This season, that puts him No. 23 worldwide and fifth in the United States.

His hammer exploits today also give him the combined collegiate record in men's hammer and shot put, with his combined total standing at 97.89 meters – breaking the record held by Georgia's Denzel Commentia from 2019 at 97.68 meters. Robinson-O'Hagan also ranks second indoors in combined shot put/weight throw distance, with his coming senior season in 2026 ripe for him to take the indoor combo record as well.

The nightcap featured Robinson-O'Hagan's historic attempt at a fourth consecutive national shot put title, but he found himself in a highly competitive final. He was fourth entering the final three rounds at 20.10m/65-11.50, which proved crucial in the later stages in terms of athlete order.

Robinson-O'Hagan took the lead in the fourth round at 20.34m/66-08.75 and improved again in the fifth to his best of the day at 20.41m/66-11.50, sitting just one round away from the repeat performance.

However, not having the final throw of the competition as he had in prior title performances came back to hurt him. North Carolina's Thomas Kitchell uncorked a career-best 20.74m/68-00.50 on the third-to-last throw of competition to take the lead from Robinson-O'Hagan, and then on the final throw it was Wisconsin's Jason Swarens – the national leader entering – who unleashed a winning heave of 21.23m/69-8 for the walk-off victory.

Despite the loss, the day still stands as a strong series of performances from the star Rebel junior, who enters his final season as a Rebel now with a whopping 12 All-America awards and 59 career NCAA points scored.

In the hammer, Robinson-O'Hagan was joined by three of his teammates – the most entries in the event in Ole Miss history. Senior Jake Dalton and junior Bryson Smith both earned Second-Team All-America after throwing the exact same distance 67.79m/222-5, which gave Dalton 12th and Smith 13th on second-best distances, respectively. Junior Mason Hickel, meanwhile, finished 22nd at 63.71m/209-0 for Honorable Mention status.

In the men's pole vault, sophomore John Kendricks and junior Logan Kelley represented Ole Miss as the first teammate duo in school history to qualify in the same season. Kendricks earned Second-Team All-America – his first career All-America nod – after finishing tied for 13th at 5.33m/17-05.75. Kelley also cleared that height – which tied his career-best from two weeks ago – but finished 17th on total misses, earning him Honorable Mention.

The men's 4x100-meter relay of senior Iangelo Atkinstall-Daley, freshman Jordan Urrutia, freshman Wesley Todd and junior Joseph Michel concluded their historic season on Wednesday with a 15th-place finish for Second-Team honors. The quartet passed the stick in 39.29, which still would have broken the Ole Miss record if not for their qualifying performance of 39.11 at the NCAA East Regional two weeks ago.

The Rebel men ended Day One with those 12 total points from Robinson-O'Hagan, and will have two more scoring opportunities on Friday with junior Arvesta Troupe in the men's high jump final, as well as the senior duo of Toby Gillen and Kidus Misgina in the men's 5K final.

Up next, though, are the Ole Miss women, who take center stage on Thursday. Sophomore Skylar Soli will open things in the hammer final at 3:30 p.m. CT, while fellow sophomore Akaoma Odeluga will close the day in the shot put final at 8:10 p.m. CT.
