Placide Shines in Volleyball’s Sweep of Incarnate Word, Texas Tech

9/20/2025 | Volleyball

OXFORD, Miss. – Behind a massive day from Gabi Placide, the Ole Miss volleyball program swept through day one of the Red Raider Classic, defeating Incarnate Word and Texas Tech on Friday at the United Supermarkets Arena.

The Rebels (7-3, 0-0 SEC) opened the day with a 3-0 win over the Cardinals (4-7, 0-0 SLC) before returning to action in the evening and earning a 3-1 victory over the Red Raiders (7-4, 0-0 Big 12).

Shayla Meyer and Placide dominated in game one, with Meyer tallying 20 kills, 12 digs and a .415 hitting percentage. Meyer became the first Rebel with 20 kills and a .400 hitting percentage in a three-set match since at least 2007. Placide also shined with 18 kills, six digs and four blocks on .378 hitting.

In game two, Placide was the star, registering a career-high 26 kills and eight digs on .316 hitting. Meyer added another double-double of 12 kills and 13 digs, while Keirstyn Carlton tallied seven kills on nine swings and notched a career-high seven blocks.

Ole Miss vs. Incarnate Word
From the start of the day, the Rebels were led by the two-headed attack of Meyer and Placide. The duo recorded eight of the first 10 kills of the opening set, with Meyer being particularly effective, attacking at will on the Incarnate Word defense with six of those kills. While the Rebels built a 14-11 advantage, the Cardinals rallied to retake a 17-16 lead. Both sides swung well in the opening frame, hitting well over .350 each, but Meyer was too impactful, reaching 10 kills in the set and powering Ole Miss to a 25-22 win.

The duo continued to roll in the second set, as both sides traded early blows. After starting the second set tied at 10-10, a strong run of serve from Placide that featured a service ace allowed the Rebels to get some breathing room. The Rebels would take a 15-11 lead, but the Cardinals remained pesky, getting the match back to all square at 17-17. However, the Rebel block took over, as Placide and Carlton combined for back-to-back blocks and two more kills from Meyer would be all the Rebels needed, taking the set 25-21.

As the Rebels entered the third set, they carried over the blocking success, registering blocks for four of the first five points of the set. Incarnate Word tried to stay in the match, but Placide and Meyer shined and the Rebels quickly pulled away with a 6-2 run to make it 16-11. Another 7-2 run was all the Rebels needed, as Meyer surged to a season-high 20 kills and the Rebels took the set 25-17.

Returning to the arena after a morning sweep, the Rebels started quickly in front of the Red Raider crowd. Placide tallied three early kills and the Rebels built a 13-7 lead. The Red Raiders rallied all the way back to cut the lead to one, but the Rebel blockers elevated their game late in the set. Four of the final five points were blocks, with Carlton and Carly Paugh contributing on two each to win 25-19.

The second set proved to be streaky for both teams, as Texas Tech built 5-2 and 9-6 leads, before the Rebels rallied to take a 14-10 advantage. However, the Red Raiders jumped back in front 17-16. After another 4-1 run spurred by Placide, the Rebels took a 20-18 lead, but the Red Raiders promptly answered with a 6-1 run to get three set points. Carlton earned a block and the Rebels forced an error to save two set points, but the Red Raiders secured the final one with a 25-23 win.

The Rebels quickly regrouped and put the pressure on the hosts. The Rebels built an early lead in the third, but a dominant run of serve from Cammy Niesen extended the set out of reach. Niesen tallied three service aces in a 7-0 run and the Rebels soared to a 17-7 advantage. From there, Carlton added a block and a kill, before Placide comfortably put the set away, 25-17.

Looking to close out the match, Mokihana Tufono became a factor in the fourth set. Tufono continued to set up Placide and Meyer with plenty of success, but also jumped into the offense with a kill and two more blocks. Tufono finished with four kills, five blocks and 42 assists, as the Rebels took a 16-12 lead. As the Rebels got closer to the finish line, Placide reached a new career-high on her final kill and the Rebels took the match with a 25-20 win.

The Rebels will wrap up action in the Red Raider Classic on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. CT, facing off against UAlbany. The match will be streamed via ESPN Plus.
