Women’s Basketball Wins Down to the Wire Game Over Oklahoma

1/8/2026 | Women's Basketball

NORMAN, Okla. – No. 18/17 Ole Miss women’s basketball earned a statement road victory by toppling No. 5/5 Oklahoma in a tight 74-69 victory on Thursday evening at the Lloyd Noble Center in Norman, Oklahoma.

This is the fourth time under head coach Yolett McPhee-McCuin that the Rebels (15-3, 2-1 SEC) have bested an AP top 10 team, and the second time doing so against a top five team, the last being a 54-49 victory over No. 5 Stanford on March 19, 2023 during the second round of the NCAA Tournament. All-time, this is Ole Miss’ 14th time defeating a top five team, and the third time this century.

Ole Miss’ victory ended Oklahoma’s (14-2, 2-1 SEC) 13-game winning streak, while holding the Sooners to some of their lowest statistical outputs of the season. The Sooners scored less than 70 points for only the second time this season, had their second-worst field goal percentage and second-fewest rebounds of the season.

Superstar Cotie McMahon paced the Rebels in scoring for the 11th time this season, dropping 22 points. She’s had at least 20 points eight times this season. McMahon also led the team with four assists, her fifth time doing that this season.

With her double-digit scoring, she has scored at least 10 points in each of Ole Miss’ first 18 games this season. McMahon has now surpassed Nikki Byrd for the longest such streak in recent memory, who started the 2011-12 season with 17 consecutive games of double-digit points. She will now set her sights on Bianca Thomas, who scored at least 10 points in the first 19 games in 2009-10.

Sira Thienou also had a strong outing behind McMahon, as they became the first Rebel duo with 20-plus points in a single game this season. Thienou had a season-high 20 points to complement McMahon and shot a staggering 75 percent from the floor on 12 attempts.

Latasha Lattimore provided a spark off the bench on both ends of the court. She had 13 points, a team-leading nine rebounds and three blocks. She extended her block streak to 12 games, which is the longest by a Rebel since Dominique Banks had a 17-game streak in 2019-20. With three blocks, she’s also had at least that many in seven games this season, which is the most since Rita Igbokwe had eight of those games in 2022-23.

Debreasha Powe was the hero of the game down the stretch. Though she finished with only six points, she nailed the final four points of the game to keep Ole Miss ahead by multiple possessions. All her points came from the free throw line, a spot where she has yet to miss from this season after 17 attempts.

The Rebels experienced their strongest start to a conference game thus far this season, holding the Sooners without a field goal for the first six minutes of the game. In that span, Oklahoma had three turnovers, all against freshman phenom Aaliyah Chavez. Meanwhile, McMahon and company grew Ole Miss’ lead to 12 points before the media timeout. Ole Miss went 7-for-7 from the field after missing shots early, finishing the quarter with only four missed shots entering the second. Lattimore and Thienou were both perfect from the field in the quarter, making three shots apiece. The strong start meant a 25-13 double-digit lead for the Rebels.

The Sooners were more efficient to start the second quarter, quickly bringing the Rebel lead back to single digits. McMahon reached 10 points for the game by scoring Ole Miss’ first four points of the quarter, keeping the Rebels ahead by multiple possessions. However, McMahon’s efforts were not enough as Oklahoma stifled the rest of the team as it mounted a comeback to within a bucket of the lead. Ole Miss still held a lead, but it was by just three points after a buzzer beater from Lattimore made it 35-32 to conclude the first half of action.

Like the first quarter, the Rebels enjoyed another strong start to the third. Christeen Iwuala and McMahon made the first four field goals for Ole Miss, McMahon’s shots were from beyond the arc to give the Rebels some breathing room with their lead. The teams managed to go back-and-forth for the remainder of the quarter, as Ole Miss had an answer for each Oklahoma strike.

Thienou was a main contributor during the third, scoring seven points in the period, including a clutch 3-pointer in the waning moments. Lattimore closed the third with an impressive layup, then her and Powe had one block each in the final 10 seconds of the quarter to keep Ole Miss ahead, 57-52.

The fourth quarter began all Oklahoma. While holding Ole Miss scoreless, Oklahoma had its first lead of the game four minutes through the quarter. Once that happened, Thienou took over, draining seven straight points for Ole Miss to put them back on top. The teams exchanged three-point plays, keeping Ole Miss ahead with one minute to remain. McMahon took a hard foul as she drove the lane, prompting a review for a technical foul on Oklahoma’s Raegan Beers. It was deemed a common foul, but McMahon still got a free throw to officially put the Rebels ahead by two possessions.

Oklahoma went into intentional foul mode after scoring a quick bucket after McMahon’s free throws. Powe made her two attempts to put Ole Miss up by four. Oklahoma had another chance at scoring, but committed a turnover with seven seconds remaining, sending Powe back to the line where she was once again perfect. Powe’s shots would prove to be the clinchers, helping hand the Rebels a tight 74-69 win.

Up next, Ole Miss is back in Oxford to face its in-state rival Mississippi State on Sunday, Jan. 11. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m. and will be broadcast on SECN.
