No. 21 Softball Drops Heartbreaker at Louisiana
2/14/2026 | Softball
LAFAYETTE, La. – Despite a fast start, the No. 21 Ole Miss softball program fell, 8-5 to Louisiana to conclude the Ragin' Cajuns Invitational on Saturday afternoon.
The Rebels (6-4, 0-0 SEC) were unable to hold off a late charge by the Ragin' Cajuns (5-2, 0-0 Sun Belt), who tallied a walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to win the game.
For the second consecutive game against the Ragin' Cajuns, the Rebels struck in the opening frame. Mackenzie Pickens drew a walk, before Madi George blasted her team-leading fourth home run down the right field line for an early 2-0 lead.
The Rebels extended the lead in the second inning thanks to some well-timed small-ball. A walk by Kennedy Bunker, followed by a groundout and wild pitch, helped get her to third base. Grace Thompson delivered a well-placed double down the left field line to drive in a run and make it 3-0.
Tenly Grisham followed that up with a bunt single and recorded a steal that allowed Thompson to come home and make it 4-0. For good measure, Taylor Malvin drove in another run on an RBI ground out to make it 5-0.
However, the Ragin' Cajuns started to chip away, cutting the lead to three after three innings, two after four innings and one after five. The Rebels tried to find a response, but the offense started to go cold, until the Ragin' Cajuns ultimately tied the game up in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Ole Miss had a chance to retake the lead in the top of the seventh as Malvin singled and Pickens moved her to second base. However, the Rebels were unable to convert and the hosts were able to hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh to win the game.
The Rebels head back to Oxford to open the 2026 home slate at the Ole Miss Softball Stadium, hosting Miami on Monday. The game will start at an adjusted time of 1 p.m. CT and will be streamed via SEC Network Plus.
