First Inning Surge Powers Softball Past Jacksonville State
2/27/2026 | Softball
OXFORD, Miss. – The Ole Miss softball program tallied six runs in the opening frame to surge to an 8-0 win in five innings over Jacksonville State, on day one of the Ole Miss Classic.
The Rebels (13-5, 0-0 SEC) batted around in the first inning, tagging the Gamecocks (13-6, 0-0 CUSA) for six runs on five hits, led by a Persy Llamas home run. Kyra Aycock picked up her seventh win of the season in the circle.
After a clean inning from Aycock to open the game, the Rebels quickly struck in the first inning. A leadoff single by Taylor Malvin set the tone, as Llamas followed it up shortly thereafter with a two-run home run for a 2-0 lead. The Rebels didn't let up, as Madi George singled, Cassie Reasner walked and Kennedy Bunker drove in a run from there to make it 3-0.
A pitching change for Jacksonville State didn't change the momentum, as Grace Thompson delivered an RBI single to make it 4-0. Walks by Liesl Osteen and Malvin added another run and Mackenzie Pickens tacked on a run the hard way with a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch to make it 6-0.
Aycock continued to keep the Gamecocks at bay, stranding runners in scoring position in the second, third and fourth inning. Aycock finished with two strikeouts over four shutout frames.
The Rebels tacked on more runs in the fourth inning, as Llamas drew a hit-by-pitch and George singled to set up Reasner. Reasner roped an opposite field single to score Llamas and make it 7-0. For good measure, Bunker drove in her second run of the day with a groundout to bring the run rule into play.
The Rebels turned to Lilly Whitten to close out the game and Whitten calmly secured a clean inning, generating two groundouts to end the contest early.
The Rebels are back in action on Saturday for day two of the Ole Miss Classic. The Rebels will face Jacksonville State at 2:30 p.m. CT, before facing off with ULM immediately after at 5 p.m. CT. Both games will be streamed via SEC Network Plus.
