Track & Field Weight Throwers Shine on SEC Indoor Day Two

2/27/2026 | Track and Field

BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Ole Miss track & field star senior Tarik Robinson-O'Hagan added another gold medal to his already crowded trophy case, winning the men's weight throw for a third straight season on an all-around powerful second day for the Rebels at the 2026 SEC Indoor Championships on Friday.

Robinson-O'Hagan – the three-time NCAA Champion, 12-time All-American and one of the best combo throwers in collegiate history – took his 10th career SEC gold medal with ease, winning on a toss of 23.25m/76-03.50 in the second round.

The win for Robinson-O'Hagan today not only marks the 10th conference crown of his storied career, but it also made him one of only three in SEC history to three-peat in the men's weight throw alongside Georgia's Andras Haklits (2000-02) and LSU's Walter Henning (2009-11). His win today pushes his career tally to an incredible 114 SEC points scored across the indoor and outdoor season, and Saturday's shot put competition will give him a chance for a third consecutive sweep of his signature indoor events.

Senior Bryson Smith gave the Rebels a one-two punch of points with his third-place finish, earning his first career SEC medal on a new career-best blast of 22.29m/73-01.75. That throw, which put him on the podium in the fifth round, ranks second in Ole Miss history behind Robinson-O'Hagan and made him only the third Rebel to ever break 73 feet in the event.

Ole Miss snared two medals and 16 total points out of the women's weight throw, thanks to two late pushes by juniors Akaoma Odeluga and Skylar Soli.

Both comfortably made the final, with Odeluga starting off in fourth and Soli in fifth, but both would go through the next two rounds of the final in different stages of stress. Soli improved to fourth in the fourth round at 21.44m/70-04.25 before launching her best of the day at 21.98m/72-01.50 to briefly take the silver position.

Odeluga, meanwhile, fouled four straight throws into the cage after her first round 21.20m.69-06.75. In the sixth and final round and in sixth place, she sailed one right down the middle that measured 22.72m/74-06.50 – good to take over the silver medal spot from Soli but keep her teammate in the bronze position for a large chunk of Rebel points.

Senior newcomer Nyah Edwards also scored in her first career SEC meet, finishing seventh at a near-PR of 20.75m/68-1.

On the track, Ole Miss scored five crucial qualifying performances on Friday – none more eye-catching, though, than senior Alicia Burnett's announcement to the track world in the women's 60-meter dash prelim.

The Missouri transfer has steadily improved throughout the indoor season, entering the weekend ranked right on the bubble at No. 16 on the NCAA descending list at her season-best 7.23. But tonight Burnett blew that time out of the water, stunning with a massive career-best 7.14 that led the field and launched her into title contention – both this week, and in two weeks as well at the NCAA Indoor Championships.

Burnett's time tonight ranks third in the NCAA this season, as well as No. 2 in the United States and No. 17 on the World list for 2026. In the Ole Miss record books, Burnett's 7.14 tonight only trails Olympian and three-time NCAA Champion McKenzie Long's 7.10 run at altitude at the 2023 national meet in Albuquerque.

Junior transfer Royanah Farmer wrapped a strong first indoor season of her own with a 15th place finish in the prelim at a PR of 7.28 – good for a tie at No. 5 in the Ole Miss record books.

The remainder of the finals qualifiers for Ole Miss came courtesy of the men's distance squad, who are in the midst of an excellent meet so far after a silver medal performance in the distance medley relay and eight more points in the 5K on Day One.

Sophomore Max Armstrong and senior Chase Rose earned auto spots to the final in the men's 800-meter after winning their respective heats, first with Rose in Heat One (1:49.03) and then Armstrong in Heat two (1:48.66).

Redshirt junior Evan Thornton-Sherman – fresh off a thrilling 3:55.35 anchor leg on that runner-up DMR – earned an AQ to the men's mile final after taking second in the first heat at 4:03.14. In the third heat, freshman John Shoemaker stunned with a time qualifier at 4:03.55 after unleashing a furious 58.15 final 400 – including a final 200 of 28.34 that was the fastest lap in the heat.

Elsewhere on the track, Ole Miss received strong performances from Dekell Minor (14th, 6.66; PR, No. 6 Ole Miss history) and Tarique Wright (21st, 6.73; No. 8 Ole Miss history) in the men's 60-meter dash and from Jo-Lauren Keane (12th, 2:07.40; Ole Miss indoor PR, No. 5 all-time) in the women's 800-meter.

In the men's heptathlon, freshman William Numnum wrapped two gutsy days of competition with a ninth-place finish in his first conference meet – despite dealing with a nagging foot injury throughout the entire two-day affair. Numnum tallied 4,803 points and charted a PR in the shot put on the first day (11.08m/36-04.25) and tied his career-best in the pole vault on Friday (4.50m/14-9).

Entering the final day of competition on Saturday, the 11th-ranked Rebel men currently hold a four-point lead over No. 5 Texas A&M, 32-28, while the Ole Miss women are seventh at 20.5 meet points.

Action begins for Ole Miss at 2 p.m. CT on Saturday with All-American senior and NCAA Champion Arvesta Troupe in the men's high jump.
