Softball Drops SEC Opening Doubleheader to No. 4 Alabama

OXFORD, Miss. – The Ole Miss softball program dropped a pair of games to the undefeated, No. 4 Alabama Crimson Tide to open SEC play on Friday at the Ole Miss Softball Stadium.
The Rebels (18-7, 0-2 SEC) fell in a narrow 5-3 decision in game one and dropped game two to the Crimson Tide (22-0, 2-0 SEC), 13-2.
GAME ONE | Ole Miss 3, No. 4 Alabama 5
The two sides battled through a scoreless first inning, before the runs began to trickle in. A two-run home run by the Crimson Tide gave the visitors an early lead, but the Rebels quickly responded in the bottom of the frame.
A Cassie Reasner single set the tone for Taylor Roman, who continued her torrid pace by launching a two-run home run off the side of the scoreboard in left center field to tie the game at 2-2.
The Tide would retake the lead in the third inning with a solo home run, but the Rebels didn't quit and sparked a rally in the fourth inning.
A Reasner walk and Kennedy Bunker double put two runners in scoring position, before the Tide intentionally walked Roman. Needing a run, the Rebels found it from Grace Thompson, who drove in Reasner with a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 3-3.
The Rebels nearly got out of a fifth inning jam, but the Tide managed to load the bases with two outs and would drive in two, bases-loaded walks to retake the lead, 5-3.
While Reasner reached for the third time on a single in the sixth inning, the Rebels were unable to strike for any more runs and fell, 5-3.
GAME TWO | Ole Miss 2, No. 4 Alabama 13 (F/6)
Game two proved to be less favorable for the Rebels, who fell into an early hole that they could not recover from. The Crimson Tide struck for nine runs through the first three frames and quickly put the game out of reach.
The Rebels would not quit though, getting two runs back in the bottom of the third inning. Three consecutive singles from Taylor Malvin, Mackenzie Pickens and Persy Llamas helped drive in the first run of the game. After Madi George drew a hit-by-pitch, Reasner picked up an RBI to cut the lead to 9-2.
The Rebels extended the game further thanks to back-to-back scoreless frames from Graycen Jordan, but the Tide finally broke the dam in the top of the sixth inning with four runs.
Roman picked up another hit in the bottom of the sixth inning to try and start a rally, but the Tide secured the win with a pair of strikeouts.
The Rebels will wrap up the three-game series against the Crimson Tide on Sunday, with game three set for 1 p.m. CT. The game will be streamed via SEC Network Plus.
